The White House fired back against the impeachment probe

A formal impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden has been launched by Republicans.

Kevin McCarthy said the formal inquiry would focus on allegations of “abuse of power, obstruction and corruption”.

Biden has been under investigation by Republicans since they took control of the House of Representatives in January.

Their probes have so far found no evidence of misconduct by Biden.

However, questionable business dealings by the president’s son Hunter Biden have been uncovered together with the president’s knowledge of his son’s activities.

In a statement at the US Capitol on Tuesday, McCarthy said a number of “credible allegations” have hinted at potential corruption.

“Today I am directing our House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,” McCarthy said.

He went on to say that the impeachment inquiry was the “next logical step” and claimed the “American public” wanted answers.

“House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden's conduct.

“Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption.”

Democrat and Majority Leader of the US Senate Chuck Schumer branded the inquiry “absurd”.

“I think the impeachment inquiry is absurd,” he said.

“The American people want us to do something that will make their lives better — not go off on these chases and witch hunts!”

The White House also hit back at the inquiry, reinforcing the fact that current probes have failed to turn up any evidence.

“House Republicans have been investigating the President for nine months, and they've turned up no evidence of wrongdoing,” a White House spokesperson said.

McCarthy said Representative James Comer, will lead the inquiry in coordination with Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and Jason Smith.
