The US president triggered a series of jokes on social media

Joe Biden has been mocked online after tripping over his words during his opening speech at the annual Easter Egg roll.

The president spoke on the White House South Lawn when he called the "oyster bunnies" up to the stage instead of the "Easter bunnies".

The White House transcript of Biden's message suggested the president said "Easter bunnies."

However, he was heard saying: "By the way, say hello to oyster bunnies! Come on up here bunnies, so they can see you, come on get in there.

"Pretty big bunny huh?" Biden asked the children as he finished his opening speech.

"Thank you all so very, very much. It’s all yours: the President’s home."

Two large bunnies appeared alongside Biden and first lady Jill Biden.

Since the 1870s, children have participated pushing brightly coloured, hard-boiled eggs across the White House South Lawn with wooden spoons.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Following his remarks, Biden met with children and their families to take photos and help them roll their eggs.

But following the annual event, the topic "Oyster Bunnies" soon trended on social media.

Congressman Wesley Hunt wrote online: "The only President who can hide his own eggs wants YOU to say hello to the Oyster Bunnies."

Conservative social media entrepreneur Graham Allen added: "No, this is not an April Fool’s joke."

Others shared edited photos of bunnies after replacing its head and body with an oyster.

It comes after the 46th President mistakenly claimed he commuted over Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge via car and train.

The 81-year-old made the comments just hours after shocking footage showed the structure collapsing following a collision with a container ship.

He was making public remarks following the disaster but appeared to falsely claim the bridge was accessible via rail.
