JD Vance personally requested to cover The Charlie Kirk Show today

America's Vice President JD Vance struggled to maintain his composure as he described an encounter with the widow of murdered conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

Speaking during his guest appearance on The Charlie Kirk Show, JD Vance revealed how Erika Kirk embraced him during their meeting following her husband's assassination.

"I'm a person who literally speaks for a living, and yet I had no idea what to say," he confessed.

Rather than attempting to offer consolation, Mr Vance explained that they spent the time discussing memories of Mr Kirk, sharing favourite anecdotes and reflecting on his personality traits.

The Vice President took over hosting duties for Monday's edition of the programme and according to the programme's executive producer Andrew Kolvet, the Vice President personally requested to present the show following Mr Kirk's death.

Speaking on the podcast, Mr Vance said: "She hugged me, and she was heartbroken as of course she would be.

"She said that she loved him so much. And I said, 'Erika, he loved you so much. He died far too young, but he died a happy man because of you, because of the family you gave him, because of the home and the life you built together'.

"We sat for about an hour and talked about Charlie. In those moments, you really don’t know what to say. I’m a person who literally speaks for a living, and yet I had no idea what to say.

"I didn’t try to console her because how can you console someone who has just lost a loving husband and father?

"Instead, we just talked about Charlie: who he was, some of our favourite stories, his quirks, and all the things that made Charlie Kirk who he was.

LATEST US DEVELOPMENTS:

"She said something to me that I will never forget. My wife was with me, and on the other side were many people from the Turning Point family, as well as from Charlie’s family.

"She told me that Charlie never raised his voice at her, that he never distrusted her, that he was never cross or mean-spirited toward her."

"Look, I’m a husband, and I’m proud of being a husband. On balance, I think I’m a pretty good one.

"But I can’t say that I’ve never been unpleasant to my wife. I can’t say that I’ve never raised my voice. Like most husbands, even the good ones, I’m sometimes imperfect. And from that moment, I took with me the lesson that I needed to be a better husband."
