Many were left stunned, expressing shock at arrests linked to social media posts

Ben Leo hit the streets of Washington DC this weekend to hear what Americans make of Britain’s approach to free speech.

Many were left stunned, expressing shock at arrests linked to social media posts and disbelief that people could be jailed for their opinions.

Several told Ben they see the UK as clamping down on liberties they take for granted every day.

One woman said: “I feel safe to give my opinion here. But if you asked me in the UK, I’d have to change how I speak. That’s not real free speech.”

Others were quick to compare Britain with the US, insisting Americans are “lucky” to enjoy First Amendment rights.

“I think it’s ridiculous,” one man told Ben. “We’ve got free speech. You guys clearly don’t.”

LATEST US DEVELOPMENTS:

“That’s insane,” another passer-by said. “Five armed police for a tweet? You’ve got to be kidding me.”

And when the conversation turned to patriotism, the Americans were just as baffled.

Several said it was “a shame” Britons feel shamed for flying the Union flag, insisting that pride in one’s country should never be controversial.

The street chats strayed into politics, with some mocking Britain’s “revolving door” of prime ministers.

One Texan laughed: “Haven’t you guys gone through 10 already?”
