Zohran Momdani has become the city's first Muslim mayor

Donald Trump has declared that Americans have a choice between "communism and common sense" after socialist Zohran Mamdani bagged the New York mayoralty last night.

Speaking at the American Business Forum in Miami, the US President gave his verdict on the recent election of the Big Apple's first-ever Muslim Mayor.

Mr Mamdani, 34, announced that he and his voters have "toppled a political dynasty".

The self-acclaimed democratic socialist beat former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican Curtis Silwa to seize power on Wednesday morning, UK time.

Now, Mr Trump has given his verdict on the election of the Democrat candidate, who has been dubbed a "communist" by many.

Addressing a booming arena of avid listeners, Mr Trump declared: "After last night's results, the decision facing all Americans could not be more clear.

"We have a choice between communism and common sense. Does that make sense to you?

"It's common sense or communism. Take a look back a 1,000 years. It hasn't worked. If it worked, would be using it, I guess, but it hasn't worked.

"Our opponents are offering an economic nightmare. We're delivering an economic miracle we have delivered in nine months."

He continued: "They want higher spending for Government and illegal aliens.

"We want bigger paychecks for American workers and American families. And that's what we're delivering. You see that?

"They stand for crime and chaos and corruption. We stand for law and order and justice also strong borders. Boy, do we have strong borders. They put America last. We put America first."

In the historic mayoral election, more than two million voters cast their votes in the mayoral election - the highest figure since 1969.

The 34-year-old will also become the first South Asian to hold the office and one of the youngest mayors elected in modern history.

Upon his victory, Mr Mamdani announced that he would launch a "new era" and vowed to stand up for New York against the President.

Born in Kampala in Uganda, the politician was elected on a ballot to pursue affordable housing, free public buses, rent freezes and universal childcare for under fives.

The staunch pro-Palestine supporter's election has spurred on disgruntlement among Trump's supporters as well as the Jewish community.

Sarah Forman, Executive Director of the New York Solidarity Network, said: "Tonight the quiet normalisation of antisemitism just got very loud.

"For years, Mayor-elect Mr Mamdani's activism was steeped in coded language about Jews, performative boycotts, exclusion, and overt hostility towards Israel.

"Now, his views gain a platform with real consequences for the city that is home to the largest Jewish community in the diaspora."

However, others expressed enthusiasm at his election, including left-wing MP Zarah Sultana who said that "this is what socialist representation looks like".

Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama said: "Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It's a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win.

"We've still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little brighter."
