The victory is Haley's first over the former president during the 2024 campaign

Nikki Haley has made history after becoming the first woman to win a Republican primary in US history as Donald Trump is defeated in Washington DC.

The victory is Haley's first over the former president during the 2024 campaign for Republican presidential candidate.

However, the Washington DC win is largely symbolic as the state is heavily Democrat-leaning.

Trump remains ahead with a huge lead over Haley and therefore more likely to face Joe Biden in November.

Haley is set to receive all 19 Republican delegates in Washington DC, which gives her 43 delegates nationwide.

She trails behind Trump with 247 delegates.

Haley's campaign national spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas said: "It's not surprising that Republicans closest to Washington dysfunction are rejecting Donald Trump and all his chaos".

However, the Trump campaign hit back, branding her the "Queen of the Swamp".

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Trump Campaign press secretary, Karoline Leavitt said: "While Nikki has been soundly rejected throughout the rest of America, she was just crowned Queen of the Swamp by the lobbyists and DC insiders that want to protect the failed status quo.

"The swamp has claimed their queen.

"President Trump will fight for every American who is being let down by these very DC insiders and devastated by Joe Biden’s failures."

Trump won delegates in Michigan, Missouri and Idaho on Saturday.

The results come ahead of "Super Tuesday" next week - when voters in 15 states and one US territory will nominate their candidate.

Haley is forecast to lose heavily, including in the two major states of California and Texas.

She has vowed to stay in the race until at least March 5.
