Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem did not specify which countries would be banned

The White House is planning to introduce a "full travel ban" on countries that are sending "killers, leeches and entitlement junkies" to the United States.

President Donald Trump seemed to back calls from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after the attack on two National Guard members in Washington DC last week.

Ms Noem said on Sunday that the suspect in the shooting, Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, was radicalised after he and his family moved to the US in 2021.

She did not provide further information about this claim.

The Homeland Security Secretary said: "I just met with the President. I am recommending a full travel ban on every damn country that's been flooding our nation with killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies.

"Our forefathers built this nation on blood, sweat, and the unyielding love of freedom - not for foreign invaders to slaughter our heroes, suck dry our hard-earned tax dollars, or snatch the benefits owed to AMERICANS. WE DON'T WANT THEM. NOT ONE."

President Trump shared the post on his Truth social media page, seemingly endorsing the proposal.

The Republican has also vowed to "permanently pause migration" from all Third World countries, confirming immigrants who hail from 19 countries covered by his travel ban will have their cases re-examined.

The countries include Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, Haiti, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and Venezuela, among others.

President Trump announced a halt to all immigration from Afghanistan, including decisions on refugee status in the wake of the attack on Wednesday.

The President told reporters on Sunday his administration could pause asylum admissions into the United States for an extended period.

He said: "No time limit, but it could be a long time...We have enough problems. We don't want those people."

The surviving National Guardsman shot by a gunman last week near the White House gave medical personnel a thumbs up when asked if he could hear them and also wiggled his toes in response, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey said.

Governor Morrisey said that Andrew Wolfe, 24, remained in serious condition.

He told reporters at a news conference: "Andrew is still fighting for his life...Andrew needs prayers."

Mr Wolfe, from Martinsburg, West Virginia, joined the West Virginia Air National Guard in 2019 and was deployed to Washington in August, according to the state's guard.

Sarah Beckstrom, 20, the other West Virginia National Guard member shot last week, died on Thursday. She enlisted in the service in 2023 and had also been in Washington since August.

Lakanwal, who faces first-degree murder and other charges, was himself shot and wounded during his attack.

He moved to the US under a Biden administration program that resettled about 70,000 Afghans who helped the US during the 20-year war in their homeland.

The US withdrew in 2021 as the Taliban seized control. Lakanwal, who was part of a CIA-backed unit in Afghanistan, was granted asylum under President Trump.
