Charlie Kirk was the co-founder of Turning Point USA

Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, has been appointed as the new CEO and chair of the board of Turning Point USA.

The organisation announced the news today "with great pride" following the death of its co-founder last week.

Mr Kirk was shot and killed while answering questions from students during an event at Utah Valley University.

In a statement, Turning Point USA said: "In Ecclesiastes, King Solomon wrote that mankind is to be tested by God.

"Today we are facing such a test, yet we also know that God has prepared us with everything we need to overcome this ordeal.

"It was the honour of our lives to serve as board members at Charlie’s side. Charlie prepared all of us for a moment like this one.

"He worked tirelessly to ensure Turning Point USA was built to survive even the greatest tests. And now, it is our great pride to announce Erika Kirk as the new CEO and Chair of the Board for Turning Point USA.

"All of us at Turning Point USA have a special role in carrying Charlie Kirk’s mantle and completing his vision of bringing us all closer to our Lord and fostering a prosperous country for generations to come.

"As Charlie always said, 'We have a country to save.' We will not surrender or kneel before evil. We will carry on.

"The attempt to destroy Charlie’s work will become our chance to make it more powerful and enduring than ever before."

Donald Trump ally Mr Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012.

The US President has credited the Conservative activist with helping him boost young voter turnout and win the White House.

In a video address following his death, Mr Kirk's widow signalled that she would be taking over her husband's mission to recruit young Americans to conservative causes.

Mrs Kirk shares her husband's Christian faith and conservative values.

"You have no idea the fire that you have ignited within this wife, the cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry," she said.

Tyler Robinson, aged 22, was this week charged with the murder of Mr Kirk.

Utah County District Attorney Jeffrey Gray said his office had filed a total of seven counts against Robinson, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

Prosecutors have added aggravating factors to the murder and firearm charges because Robinson is believed to have targeted Mr Kirk based on political views and knew that children would witness the killing, Mr Gray said.

The County Attorney said he had made the decision to seek the death penalty "independently, based solely on the available evidence and circumstances and nature of the crime".

Tributes flooded in for Mr Kirk following the shooting, including from Mr Trump.

Speaking shortly after his death, the president posted to Truth Social: "No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie.

"He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us.

"Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!"

A vigil held by the UK branch of Turning Point in central London drew a large crowd of supporters, with attendees lighting candles, laying flowers and standing in silence to honour Mr Kirk’s memory.
