Dale Vince, who has donated more than £6.3million to the Labour Party since 2014, is not accused of any wrongdoing

Labour mega-donor Dale Vince has a contract with Sir Sadiq Khan's City Hall worth more than £3.5million.

Mr Vince, 63, who has donated more than £6.3million to Labour since 2014, has been supplying electricity to the Greater London Authority (GLA) since 2020.

The GLA, which is managed by London's Labour Mayor, has made the multi-million-pound payments to Ecotricity since 2020.

However, Mr Vince's payments extend beyond the Labour Party, with the Forest Green Rovers owner also handing £20,000 to Sir Keir Starmer, £10,000 to Angela Rayner and £150,000 to the party-affiliated think tank Labour Together.

Despite there being no suggestion of any wrongdoing, Sir Sadiq critics warned that the revelation will anger taxpayers.

Zia Yusuf, the head of Reform UK’s department of government efficiency, said: “The fact one of Labour’s biggest donors, Dale Vince’s Ecotricity, has been handed £3.5million of taxpayer money from Sadiq Khan’s Greater London Authority in the last five years will enrage taxpayers.”

Susan Hall, the Conservative leader at the London Assembly, said the revelation was “very interesting".

Ms Hall, who was defeated by Sir Sadiq in the 2024 London Mayoral Election, added that she was previously unaware that Vince’s firm supplied power to City Hall.

Following Sir Sadiq's victory last May, Mr Vince said: “Congrats to Sadiq Khan and the team — great news for London and the country — the negative campaigning didn’t work for the Tories, won’t work in the GE either.

"Historic third term, London has the mayor it deserves and wanted. Despite the voter suppression too.”

However, the revelation might also cause a political headache for the Prime Minister, with Sir Keir vowing to end Tory sleaze ahead of his victory in the 2024 General Election.

Earlier this month, the Labour Infrastructure Forum was accused of offering £7,850 plus VAT for a "private breakfast/dinner round table with an influential Labour figure".

Other deals included £11,750 plus VAT for a "parliamentary panel event with key policymakers", and between £21,500 and £30,000 plus VAT to sponsor a "Westminster drinks reception".

While the Labour Infrastructure Forum is not a lobbying company or officially part of the Labour Party, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones and Northampton South MP Mike Reader were among the high-profile parliamentarians with close connections to the group.

A number of other sleaze allegations have been put at Labour's door since Starmer romped to victory last July.

Labour donor Lord Alli was embroiled in an early spat after it emerged he initially held a Downing Street pass after funding at least seven Cabinet Ministers with more than £300,000.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves also came under-fire over suggestions that she embellished her CV, with Anti-Corruption Minister Tulip Siddiq later being forced to resign while Bangladesh carries out its embezzlement investigation into her family.

However, in a damning opinion poll released earlier this year, 54 per cent of voters described Starmer's Government as being fairly or very sleazy.

A mere 28 per cent said that Labour was not very sleazy or not sleazy at all, with another 19 per cent remaining unsure.

The proportion of 2024 Labour voters who labelled Starmer's Government as either fairly or very sleazy also stood at 25 per cent.

Reform voters are the most likely to see Starmer's Government as sleazy, with 69 per cent describing Labour as very sleazy and an additional 20 per cent opting to describe it as fairly sleazy.

An Ecotricity spokesman said: “Ecotricity has been supplying green energy to the public sector for three decades — since we first began. It’s entirely normal.

“Our contract with the GLA has been widely reported on over the years — and was won in a competitive process via the local authority purchasing consortium, Laser.

"It’s a small contract and has no connection to anything else.”

The Mayor of London's office added: “The Mayor and his team had no involvement in or knowledge of this contract award.

“GLA officers appointed an independent public sector energy procurement company to find the best provider for the GLA’s requirements. The contract ends in March 2026.”
