Donald Trump declared Sir Sadiq Khan a 'terrible mayor' during his keynote speech to the UN

Sir Sadiq Khan's attack on US President Donald Trump is a "good distraction" from dealing with the "two biggest issues" facing London, a Republican has claimed.

Speaking to GB News, Republicans Overseas UK spokeswoman Jennifer Ewing said she "very much doubts" that the London Mayor was in Mr Trump's original speech to the UN.

Mr Trump hit out at Sir Sadiq during his speech to the UN on Tuesday, declaring: "I look at London, where you have a terrible Mayor, terrible, terrible Mayor, and it's been changed. Now they want to go to Sharia law. But you are in a different country, you can't do that."

Hitting back at Mr Trump, Sir Sadiq branded him a "racist, sexist, misogynistic and Islamophobic".

The London Mayor told broadcasters that the public will be "wondering what it is about this Muslim mayor who leads a liberal, multicultural, progressive, successful city that means I appear to be living rent-free inside Donald Trump's head".

Responding to Sir Sadiq's attack on the US President, Ms Ewing told GB News: "As you know, he didn't have his teleprompter working, so he had to just go fly off the cuff and make it up.

"I doubt very much that Sadiq Khan was in President Trump's original speech to the UN. I doubt that very much."

Highlighting the "distraction" it has posed for the Mayor, she added: "But today in the news cycle or whenever that bus photo shoot was being done, it's clearly obvious that this is a wonderful distraction for the Mayor.

"Because he doesn't have to deal with the two biggest issues that President Trump brought up at Nato. Which are out of control immigration and of course, energy insecurity in the United Kingdom."

Criticising Britain's energy policy further, the Republican Overseas spokesman said: "And if we were not talking about this, we would be talking about the fact that President Trump pointed out that businesses in the UK pay five times as much as businesses in the US. That's not that's not a great thing.

"It was only 20 years ago that the United Kingdom was energy independent. And he's calling him a racist and a misogynist and all these other things."

Weighing in on Donald Trump's remarks about Sir Sadiq, host Martin Daubney pointed out: "Donald Trump attacks politicians of all stripes, of all genders, of all races if he thinks they're terrible.

"Look at Gavin Newsom in California. It's not uniquely that he's an Islamophobe or a racist who's singling out Sadiq Khan, is it?"

Agreeing with Martin, Ms Ewing responded: "No, and I think anyone who pays attention to President Trump even before he was President knows he is bombastic, he speaks in hyperbole.

"But most importantly, he's not an ideologue at all, he really is someone that values meritocracy."

She concluded: "And that's why if you look at his cabinet, he didn't feel the need to say, oh, it's the first gay this or the first woman this, he's just like 'this is the best person for the job, I don't care what they look like'. It's not these identity politics, it's just the best person."
