Mr Sunak said he would not leave his role immediately but would do so once a Tory leadership race begins. "I would like to say, first and foremost, I am sorry."
Speaking about this on GB News Former Prisons Minister, Widdecombe said: "I think he did go with dignity. But I think what one should always remember is that he was instrumental in unseating a prime minister, who had not been elected by the party in the country but had been elected by the parliamentary party.

"And therefore there was always going to be tension, and I think that tension was not resolved and spilt over into the election, with a lot of people simply resenting the fact that he'd staged a coup against their choice."
Martin Daubney asked her: "Do you think a lot of Conservatives never really forgave Rishi Sunak for what they perceived to be stabbing Boris in the back?"

"I mean, there was Boris and then, you know, Liz Truss and whatever you may think of those two.
"The fact is that the first had been elected by the general public, the second was the party's anointed.
"Rishi Sunak was simply the parliamentary parties anointed."
Rishi was the first Prime Minister appointed by King Charles in October 2022.
Sunak succeeded Liz Truss as Prime Minister after her disastrous tenure of just 45 days.
A statement from Buckingham Palace confirming Sunak's resignation said: "The Right Honourable Rishi Sunak MP had an Audience of The King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept."

The former PM was accompanied by his wife Akshata Murty at Buckingham Palace.
The couple were greeted at the King’s door by Sir Clive Alderton, principal private secretary to the King and Queen, and the King’s equerry Commander William Thornton, Royal Navy.
Sunak left privately and unseen with his family after the audience with King Charles.
