The Prime Minister has published his tax return data

Rishi Sunak paid £432,493 in tax in the 2021/22 financial year, newly published documents show.

The Prime Minister's tax return highlighted that he paid £325,826 in capital gains tax and £120,604 in UK income tax on income of £329,561.

Sunak published details of his tax for the past three years after coming under pressure over his financial affairs.

There had been criticism of Sunak after it was revealed last year that he had originally maintained his US green card status and his wife, Akshata Murthy, had claimed non-dim status.

The arrangements meant that the former Chancellor was required to pay taxes in the US and his wife's able to avoid UK tax on her vast foreign income.

It also showed that he paid £393,217 in 2020/2021, and £227,350 in 2019/20.

Critics were quick to question the timing of the release, which came on a very busy news day in Westminster.

Sunak made the figures public on the same day that Boris Johnson was the focus of most headlines due to his appearance in front of the privileges committee to give evidence on Partygate.

It was also on the same day as the Commons voted on Sunak’s new deal on post-Brexit trading arrangements for Northern Ireland.

The Prime Minister first pledged to make the figures public last summer when he lost the Tory leadership race to Liz Truss.

He repeatedly promised to do so in recent months after taking office in November 2022.

Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner tweeted: “Wonder why he’s chosen today?”
