Mason Humberston was verbally abused in his local supermarket after being the first Labour councillor in the country to defect to Reform

A Reform UK councillor has hit out at the "sheer hypocrisy" from the Left after being racially abused in his local supermarket.

Speaking to GB News, Stevenage Borough Council's Mason Humberstone recalled having abuse hurled at him by another man, after becoming the first ex-Labour Councillor to defect to Reform.

Telling the People's Channel's host Martin Daubney what happened, Mr Humberstone recalled the man "screaming" at him, saying: "That w****r in Farage’s party, you should be ashamed of yourself as a black man."

He explained: "I literally just popped into the local Tesco to grab a few bits. I was paying and then literally this gentleman behind me looked like he was on something or had had a few to drink.

"He started in a tirade of expletives and said that I should be ashamed as a black man for being a part of Farage's party."

Mr Humberstone continued: "And to be fair, I just kind of tried to take the high road, I just said thank you, and I was trying to pay as quickly as I could because you don't know what these situations can turn into.

"I don't want to be another Jo Cox or David Amess. So thankfully, a bystander made a comment, and then security stepped in, I quickly paid, and I rushed off."

Asked by Martin if the abuser was a "white middle class man", the councillor confirmed: "Yes he was."

Martin then fumed: "Isn't it funny how a white, middle class lefty steams into you, a person of colour, because you're not the right kind of person of colour to be working for Reform UK? It's astonishing!"

Mr Humberstone replied: "Yeah it is, and this is what I found. It shows the sheer hypocrisy bringing my skin tone into it.

"The left thrive on identity politics and they're always racially motivated when it comes to attacking people, and the dream of a colourblind society where you can just crack on based on your skills and your qualities is unfortunately further away than ever because of the type of politics that they peddle."

Martin agreed, asking him: "Why is it do you think that in the mind of a lot of people on the liberal left, you're duty bound to vote for certain parties?

"If you have immutable characteristics such as your skin colour, your gender or your sexual orientation, what on earth has that got to do with it? Why can't we just choose our parties based on who appeals to us?"

The Reform councillor said: "I think it comes from kind of like a sanctimonious moral righteousness, where they kind of patronise and they preach and they say that based on the colour of our skin, we can only follow a specific path, same with gender as you rightly said.

"But the reality is, if you actually look at, for example, my community, they are very socially and culturally conservative, a lot of them have a very patriotic belief in their nation."

He added: "And this is where the left completely lose them, because all they want is a colourblind society where you can crack on and just live your life and be appreciated for who you are."

Mr Humberstone concluded: "And that's exactly what Reform hopes to bring and is what I found ever since joining Reform, not being labeled and actually being appreciated for what I can bring to the table."

Addressing the incident on social media, the Reform councillor vowed to "not be intimidated" by the abuse and not be "bullied" for his political beliefs.

He said: "I won’t be intimidated by abuse and I won’t be bullied out of my beliefs.

"Huge thanks to the bystanders who stood up for me and to Tesco security for stepping in."
