Brexiteer figures are concerned about Starmer's bid for closer ties with the EU

Ben Habib has taken aim at the party he was once deputy leader for, Reform UK, saying they must declare Brexit “has not been done”.

The insurgent party is fronted by Nigel Farage, who is perhaps most well known for his campaigning for Britain to leave the European Union.

Speaking on GB News, Habib said that eight years on from the historic referendum, we are still yet to see Britain reap the rewards, and Reform UK must acknowledge that.

“Boris Johnson has not delivered Brexit”, he said.

“It’s not just semantics. It’s important we call this right and declare Brexit is not done.

“Those of us who campaigned for Brexit, people like Nigel Farage and me, have a massive obligation to stay on the battlefield until we genuinely do jettison the European Union.”

Habib recently left Reform UK after becoming outspoken in his criticism of the party, with particular attention given to a perceived lack of democratisation.

GB News’s Nana Akua asked him if perhaps he would be better served remaining part of the populist party if he is to help secure his preferred outcome.

“This is a fundamental importance”, he responded.

“The whole point of Reform is standing up for the United Kingdom. An integral part of the United Kingdom is Northern Ireland.

“As long as the Northern Ireland Windsor framework stays in place and the other treaties Boris Johnson signed us up to, we’re committed to staying in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), we’re even committed to military cooperation with the EU.

“We have to recognise Brexit is not done and denounce the Irish Sea border.

“We must put a political arm around the shoulder of our kin in Northern Ireland and absolutely bring them back into the United Kingdom, that is vital.”

Starmer this week made a move that will likely not settle well with Habib and Reform UK as he ventured to Brussels for the first time in his premiership.

While he and his Labour colleagues have made clear they do not intend on revisiting the Brexit vote, they have hinted at attempts to garner closer ties with the bloc.
