The Chancellor was upset due to a 'personal matter', a Treasury spokesman added

Downing Street has insisted that Sir Keir Starmer is not about to sack Rachel Reeves after his Chancellor appeared visibly upset during a heated exchange at Prime Minister's Questions.

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said that Reeves is "going nowhere", adding that the Chancellor has "not offered her resignation".

The confirmation comes after Starmer refused to rule out sacking his Chancellor ahead of the next General Election.

Starmer instead opted to point out that Labour inherited a £22billion black hole from the previous Conservative Government.

He added: “She [Badenoch] certainly won’t [be in post at the next election]. I have to say I am always cheered up when she asks me questions or responds to a statement because she always makes a complete mess of it and shows just how unserious and irrelevant they are.”

In a put down to the Prime Minister's evasive answer, Badenoch replied: "How awful for the Chancellor that he couldn’t confirm that she will stay in place."

However, No10 has since clarified the Prime Minister’s position.

A No10 spokesman said: "The Chancellor is going nowhere. She has the Prime Minister’s full backing.

“He has said it plenty of times, he doesn’t need to repeat it every time the Leader of the Opposition speculates about Labour politicians.

“The Chancellor and the Prime Minister are focused entirely on delivering for working people.

“It’s thanks to the Chancellor’s management of the economy that we managed to restore stability, which has led to four interest rate cuts, wages rising faster than inflation and she recently delivered a spending review that invested in Britain’s national renewal.”

Downing Street also insisted that the Prime Minister still has confidence in Work & Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall, simply responding: "Yes."

No11 separately confirmed that Reeves appeared upset due to a personal matter.

"It’s a personal matter, which - as you would expect - we are not going to get into. The Chancellor will be working out of Downing Street this afternoon," a spokesman added.

GB News has since revealed that Reeves was upset following a bust-up with both Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle and a senior figure in Government.

The People’s Channel has been told that Reeves had a disagreement with Hoyle yesterday after being asked to hurry along with her answers in the Commons.

When Hoyle saw Reeves again this morning, the Commons Speaker raised the issue for a second time and explained he was trying to get to frontbencher questions.

At his point, Reeves "burst into tears", according to witnesses, who claimed the Chancellor is “under pressure”.

When Hoyle asked what was the matter with Reeves, a second Cabinet Minister said that "something had gone on before" in a conversation between Reeves and a senior figure in the Government just moments before.

The Treasury and Speaker’s Office declined to comment.
