More than 1,200 migrants crossed the Channel in a single day over the weekend

GB News host Andrew Pierce has hit out at "hopeless and incompetent" Labour after the Government seemingly blamed a record number of migrant crossings on "good weather".

Speaking on GB News, the Britain's Newsroom host took aim at Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, claiming the Government should get on with "smashing the gangs".

Responding to the migrant crisis, a Home Office spokesman claimed that the people-smuggling gangs have been "able to exploit periods of good weather to increase the rate of crossings".

The Home Office also claimed it is "restoring grip to the broken asylum system".

Discussing the claims on GB News, Andrew jibed: "The dinghy crossings, according to the Home Secretary, is all about the weather. Who'd have thought it?

"Why are they collecting data? When it's not windy, they're crossing in greater numbers."

Attempting to explain the reasoning for Labour's data collection, GB News senior commentator Nigel Nelson responded: "For some reason, the Tory party are getting really sort of up in arms about this.

"But what the Government are doing is collecting data about the weather to match with the number of people who cross. Well, it's obvious isn't it?"

Andrew then joked: "They should buy a wind machine! The data just shows how incompetent and hopeless they are."

Echoing Andrew's remark, broadcaster Dr Renee Hoenderkamp suggested: "Why don't they just buy big fan and blow all the small boats back?"

Dr Hoenderkamp then stated: "We're in a world where they won't tell us who's committing violent sexual crime, but they will tell us about the weather and boat crossings, because they want to discuss that in order to find an excuse for why we are going to hit record numbers this year.

"And do you know what? It's irrelevant, because what's happening is the boats are bigger, they've got more people on them, and all of the pools that are pulling people here continue.

"The hotel rooms, the telephones, the driving lessons, the money, everything. Until we stop all of that, the boats are going to come whether the sun shines or not."

A Home Office spokesman said: "This Government is restoring grip to the broken asylum system it inherited that saw a whole criminal smuggling enterprise allowed to develop, where gangs have been able to exploit periods of good weather to increase the rate of crossings for too long.

"That’s why we are giving counter-terror style powers to law enforcement, launching an unprecedented international crackdown on immigration crime, have prevented 9,000 crossings from the French coastline this year alone and have returned almost 30,000 people since the election.

"At the same time we are cracking down on the false promise of jobs used to sell spaces on these boats, with illegal working visits and arrests up by more than 40 per cent under this Government."
