A second Air France flight has failed to deport any illegal migrants back to France in the space of 24 hours

Suella Braverman has declared Sir Keir Starmer "only has himself to blame" as Labour's exchange deal with France has so far failed to deport any illegal migrants.

Speaking to GB News, the former Home Secretary hit out at the Prime Minister's latest efforts to tackle the migrant crisis, stating that the British people have been "let down again".

An Air France flight, which was supposed to have at least one migrant on it, took off without them, as last-minute legal challenges blocked the deportation.

Proposals to fly a second migrant out on Tuesday were also scrapped after his lawyers claimed his experience of being "tortured and trafficked" should "prevent him from being returned to France".

Discussing the so far unsuccessful plan, Mrs Braverman told GB News: "Unfortunately we've been around this block before, haven't we? And these scenes have become all too familiar to the British public.

"And this time, I'm afraid Keir Starmer has only himself to blame. He scrapped our Rwanda plan, which would have been a deterrent had it got working, but we're very now used to the scenario where we're trying to deport illegal migrants, people who have broken into our country, people who don't have the right to be here, and at the last minute, they managed to thwart their deportation because of legal avenues, human rights and court interventions."

She stated: "And that's what we've seen here. Yet again, I could have predicted this had Keir Starmer asked me, but unfortunately, the British people are being let down yet again."

Asked by Martin Daubney if the decision to use commercial airlines to deport migrants was a mistake, Mrs Braverman agreed, calling for "RAF planes" to be used instead.

The ex-Home Secretary said: "Commercial companies will not want to be associated with this policy, that's the reality of it all, they are susceptible to public pressure and consumer lobbying.

"We need to use RAF planes, we have to use equipment and assets which the Government and the state have total control over. That's one key aspect of this plan, if it needs to work.

"And secondly, ultimately, we need to strip away all of the obstructive human rights laws. We need to leave the European Convention on Human Rights. I've set out a plan on how to do that, Keir Starmer and Shabana Mahmood are very welcome to read it, as is the Attorney General, Lord Hermer."

She told GB News: "But the reality is that as long as we are subject to those obstructive, expansionist, interventionist laws, there's no chance on Earth that deportation flights are going to work.

"As we hear in the incidents of today's flight, it was scuppered because the immigrant's lawyers claimed his experience of being tortured and trafficked should prevent him from being returned to France."

Pressed by host Martin Daubney on whether Labour's latest "botched" plan to leave the ECHR is the "best advert possible" for leaving the ECHR, Mrs Braverman agreed.

She concluded: "I think that's a very good point. The more he perseveres down this ill-fated route of worshipping at the altar of international human rights laws, subscribing to the Strasbourg court and signing up to all of these absurd rulings, the more public opinion will turn against him and will be in favour of us leaving the European Convention on Human Rights.

"We all agree that people have the right against torture, inhumane and degrading treatment, I have no problem with that. But the way it's been interpreted and the fabrication and the lack of substantial evidence to back up these claims is laughable that it's made a mockery of our asylum system."

She added: "The chances of him being tortured in France, I would say, are nil. So we really need to look behind some of these claims because they are made up largely, and they are obstructing our ability to control our borders."
