Controversy has erupted over a new police unit established to track anti-immigration sentiment on social media platforms

Camilla Tominey launched a fierce challenge to Labour minister James Murray, demanding to know whether the Government believed British citizens required surveillance of their opinions rather than protection on their streets.

The confrontation occurred as controversy erupted over a new police unit established to track anti-immigration sentiment on social media platforms.

"Do you really think that the great British public needs their thoughts to be policed more, rather than their streets?" Tominey pressed during the heated interview.

James Murray fired back: "Well, I think people want more police officers on their streets, which is why that’s a key focus for the Government.

Camilla confronted the minister with damaging statistics about the Government's immigration enforcement record.

"We know the public wants to see more officers not just in residential areas, but also in town centres, where a lot of issues are happening. That’s one of the areas of focus in the work we’re doing as a Government."

Camilla refused to accept the response, preparing to confront the minister with damaging statistics about the Government's immigration enforcement record.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

She said: "The statistics on prosecutions of small boat facilitators are really quite damning for Labour. Prosecutions have fallen by more than 60 per cent in your first year in office.

"Meanwhile, we’ve got a record number of illegal immigrants entering on small boats, up to 33,000 between July 2024 and June 2025.

"That can’t be blamed on the Tories. And just 446 individuals were charged with an immigration offence in that same period.

"That’s just 1 per cent of those crossing on small boats. So you’re not smashing the gangs. In fact, the gangs are having a smashing time under Labour, aren’t they?"

James Murray defended: "No look, we know that small boat crossings and the asylum backlog are issues that matter deeply to people across Britain, and we are determined to crack them.

Camilla Tominey said: "James Murray, hang on. The rhetoric isn’t matching the statistics I’ve just given you.

"Let’s make it really simple. Illegal migration into the UK has risen by 55 per cent under Labour. In what world can you claim, 'We’re smashing the gangs, we’re dealing with illegal migration,' if that’s the reality?"

Murray defended the Government's record, citing 35,000 deportations of individuals without legal status over the previous year and claiming asylum decision rates had doubled.

Camilla Tominey grilled the Labour MP

He argued that international collaboration meant some smuggling facilitators faced arrest and prosecution abroad, affecting UK prosecution figures.

"This is a complex issue. There's no single switch to flick or lever to pull—it requires action on all fronts, and it won't be solved overnight," Murray insisted.

When Tominey demanded a timeline for ending hotel usage for asylum seekers, Murray offered only that it would occur "over the course of this Parliament".
