Labour are defending four seats this week

Labour faces four key litmus tests across England and Wales this week as pressure piles on the Prime Minister to resign.

Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride is leading calls for Keir Starmer to step down if he's found to have not told the whole truth about Peter Mandelson, who was sacked as US ambassador over his close friendship with the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Voters are poised to deliver their verdict on the current crisis gripping No 10 on Thursday as Labour will be defending seats in Brighton & Hove, Cardiff and Warwick.

Thursday will also see the first electoral test for new Green Party leader Zack Polanski, as his insurgent party is defending a seat in Warwick. This brings the total seats up for grabs to five.

Could Reform make a surprise gain, the Greens come out on top, the Tories make a comeback or will Labour survive the storm?

Below, GB News takes a closer look at each seat.

Queen's Park (Brighton and Hove)

We're starting our by-election preview on the south coast this week as the Queen's Park ward on Labour led Brighton & Hove Council is up for grabs.

The by-election was called after Labour Councillor Tristram Burden resigned, citing a conflict of interest in his new job as a local authority inspector at the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

When the seat was last up for grabs in 2024, the Green Party came second, with an Independent candidate in third.

Labour holds a healthy majority on Brighton and Hove Council which they won back from the Greens in the 2023 election.

Queen's Park is part of the Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven parliamentary constituency, currently held by Labour's Chris Ward.

Mr Ward made headlines this month after he was announced as a cabinet office parliamentary secretary in the mass Cabinet reshuffle.

The candidates standing in the Queen's Park by-election are:

  • Simon Charleton (Labour)
  • Sunny Choudhury (Conservative)
  • Rudi Dikty-Daudiyan (Liberal Democrat)
  • Adrian Hart (Independent)
  • Marina Lademacher (Green)
  • John Shepherd (Reform UK)

Trowbridge (Cardiff)

Heading into the Welsh capital next, with another Labour defence for the Trowbridge ward in the east of Cardiff.

The by-election was called after the resignation of former Labour Cardiff Council leader Chris Lay.

A spokesman from the Labour group at Cardiff Council that Mr Lay moved after receiving a promotion in his day job.

The last time the seat was up for grabs in 2022, Labour had a healthy majority, with the Conservatives in second place.

Labour holds a decent-sized majority on the city council, with 55 councillors..

At last year's General Election, the corresponding Cardiff East constituency was won by Jo East, who won the newly created seat with a majority of 9,097 over Liberal Democrat candidate, Rodney Berman

NEWHAM COUNCIL

Plaistow South (Newham)

From one capital to another, with a by-election taking place in Plaistow South in the east London borough of Newham.

The by-election was called after the tragic death of veteran Councillor Neil Wilson, who was Cabinet Member for Health and Adults Social Care.

Paying tribute to the late Councillor Wilson, Newham Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz said "We are desperately sad and heartbroken to learn of this saddest of news about our dear friend and colleague.

"Neil was ‘Father of the Council’ and gave over 30 years’ service to the borough and the residents that he cared so much about. We are all in shock at this news and will miss him terribly.

"Neil’s faith was so important to him and we are comforted to know that he is with the Lord he loved. He is in our thoughts and prayers."

Part of the West Ham and Beckton constituency, Labour held onto the seat in 2024 with James Asser beating Newham Independent candidate Sophia Naqvi.

The candidates standing in the Plaistow South by-election are:

  • Rois Miah (Conservatives)

Kenilworth Park Hill (Warwick)

Last on our tour for this week is one of two by-elections in Warwick, and The Green Party will be looking to hold on after the resignation of Lara Cron in the Kenilworth Park Hill ward at Warwick District Council

It is the first defence for the Greens since self-professed "eco-populist" Zack Polanski became the party's leader.

Councillor Cron stood down after she announced she was moving away from the area for family reasons.

In her departure letter, she said: "It has been a pleasure to work with you all, but I am particularly proud of the close working relationship of the local Green Party team, which has supported me over the years.

"I plan to stay in touch and carry the experience with me as I take my passion for planning and politics northward."

The council is currently run by a Greens and Labour coalition led by Green councillor, Ian Davison.

Earlier this month, Tory councillor for Budbrooke & Bishop's Tachbrook Jan Matecki told Councillor Davison problems in the administration "can no longer be ignored" and said it was time for change, adding the current coalition was "toxic".

On a parliamentary level, the corresponding Kenilworth & Southam was one of the very few bright spots for the Conservatives in the Midlands, as former Attorney General Sir Jeremy Wright held onto his seat with a much-reduced majority of 6,574 against Labour's Cat Price.

The candidates standing in the Kenilworth Park Hill by-election are:

  • John Dubber (Liberal Democrats)
  • Alison Firth (Green Party)
  • Malcolm Graham (Conservative Party)
  • Nicola Jones (Labour)
  • Timothy Wade (Reform UK)
