Sir Keir has insisted he still plans to 'change the country'

Sir Keir Starmer has remained adamant that he will be leader of the Labour Party at the next general election and has urged voters to give him time to turn the country around.

The Prime Minister has insisted he still plans to "change the country" - but cautioned it would take some time.

"I recognise the frustrations that in 12 months we’ve not been able to undo 14 years of failure," he told Times Radio.

“[But] I never said that was possible. I will be judged at the next election on, I think, three things above all else.

"Have living standards improved? Do people genuinely feel better off? Are public services better?

"And do people feel more safe and secure in their own neighbourhood?”

Sir Keir could however be challenged for the position as Labour leader in the next election, as Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has been labelled a possible contender.

Mr Burnham last week revealed that MPs have been privately urging him to return to Westminster to challenge Sir Keir for party leadership.

"People have contacted me throughout the summer – yeah," he told The Telegraph.

“I’m not going to say to you that that hasn’t happened, but as I say, it’s more a decision for those people than it is for me.”

However, the former Leigh MP faces a number of hurdles before challenging Sir Keir for Labour's leadership.

Mr Burnham would need to resign as Greater Manchester Mayor, win a Westminster seat in a by-election, and receive at least 80 nominations from Labour MPs.

Despite losing miserably to Jeremy Corbyn in the 2015 Labour leadership contest, opinion polls suggest Mr Burnham is the clear frontrunner to replace Sir Keir in No10.

A survey conducted in July by Ipsos Mori found that Mr Burnham was the public's top choice for the Labour leadership, opening up a nine-point leader over Sir Keir.

Mr Burnham's net score stood at 12 per cent, with the Prime Minister's sinking into the red at -20 per cent.

The Greater Manchester Mayor has however insisted he is supporting the Prime Minister.

At a fringe event at the Labour party conference earlier this week, he said he believed Sir Keir was the right man to be in No10.
