The Prime Minister laughed and thanked him, before adding: "It’s been a long night and day, I’ve been busy appointing my Cabinet during the course of this afternoon."

Starmer then told Biden that he is looking forward to seeing him at a Nato conference in Washington next week.

The US president responded: "I’m looking forward to it as well. There’s no doubt that under your leadership our two countries are going to continue our special relationship.

"We’re working together on just about every issue, supporting Ukraine, managing the competition with China, advancing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific with Aukus."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Starmer replied: "The special relationship is obviously the bedrock, always has been, for our defence, for our security and prosperity, which obviously is central to our missions for government."

It comes after Donald Trump congratulated Nigel Farage on winning his first ever seat.

Farage was elected as the MP for Clacton after receiving 46.2 per cent of the vote.

Following his win, former US President Trump said: "Congratulations to Nigel Farage on his big WIN of a Parliament seat amid Reform UK Election success."

Posting on social media, Trump added: "Nigel is a man who truly loves his Country! DJT."

Trump did not congratulate Keir Starmer on his landslide win despite their "special relationship".

Starmer previously said he would work with whoever wins the next presidential election, with Britain’s "historic" relationship with the US "above the individuals who are in office".
