In a GB News poll, more than half of Britons believe workers should be favoured by the Chancellor

Britons have become embroiled in a fierce debate over who Rachel Reeves should prioritise ahead of Wednesday's looming Budget.

Speaking to GB News, Fareham residents were asked by the People's Channel whether the Chancellor should favour workers or pensioners in her fiscal plan, which was met with mixed reaction.

In a GB News poll, more than 50 per cent of Britons believe workers should be put first over pensioners in Labour's latest tax-hiking Budget.

Voicing their views in the South East, Britons offered their verdict on who Ms Reeves should go easier on in Wednesday's announcement.

One man told GB News: "Well, it's got to be... that's a difficult question! I think workers, but we need to get workers moving because we haven't got anyone working either, they're all on benefits, that's the problem.

"But pensioners, if you're saved up for your pension, you've done 50 years like I have working on building sites to just about scrape by, it'd be nice if we could raise the tax threshold that you can earn before being taxed. There's too much on welfare, in my opinion. Far too much on welfare, too much emphasis.

"And if thy take the cap off kids, people can have about 7 or 8 children, so it's really a bit of a burden on us, I feel. So workers definitely, but as long as they have an incentive to get out and work, that's my opinion and everyone's entitled to an opinion."

Speaking to a pensioner, she admitted workers need to be favoured more by the Government.

She stated: "I'm a pensioner, but I think the workers deserve pay rises."

In disagreement with the pensioner, a man argued older Britons are not "getting a fair crack of the whip" in today's society.

He explained: "Well, as a pensioner, I would like to see some benefits to us, but I think she should try and treat everybody equally. We need the workers to help with the economy of the country.

"But I've got to say, from a pensioner's point of view, I was born in the war, and I think I helped the country recover afterwards, and yet now in our older age, we're not getting a fair crack of the whip. I've never claimed benefits, and we've had various penalties imposed upon us, and I'm on the lower pension because I was born before a certain date.

"But anyway, we wait for tomorrow and see what she's got to say, but I'm not holding my breath, and I don't think we'll come out of it too well. And I don't think the workers will come out of it too well either."

Also arguing in favour of pensioners, another Fareham local told GB News: "Pensioners 100 per cent, because pensioners have worked all their life, they've paid all their money and they're on a stupid amount of money, and everybody's on the breadline being on a pension."

Unable to pick a side, one Briton argued that both workers and pensioners should be prioritised, but urged Labour to crackdown on the country's benefits system.

He said: "Both pensioners and workers should be. Pensioners have worked all their life, and workers, without the workers the country would come to a stop. What gets me the most is all the people on Social Security that can work, that don't choose to work.

"But all the time the Government has been putting up the benefits, it's not giving the people incentive to get out of the house to go to work. But apart from that, pensioners and workers should be considered the most because they're the most important."

He added: "Pensioners, because they've worked all their life, if it wasn't for the pensioners, people wouldn't be getting Social Security. And a lot of pensioners I think, feel that they've worked all their life, but they're still paying out for people that don't actually work, then they've probably have children, so they've had to pay for the youngsters and now they've left home, I think they still feel like they're paying pain for children again."

Speaking to a young Briton, he argued the workers should be favoured over pensioners in the Budget, saying: "I think workers should be prioritised because the workers are the future.

"Workers are there for the future, they make everything grow and are basically making our world better. And pensioners, they're not very active."
