The Prime Minister spoke to journalists after unveiling the terms of his post-Brexit ‘reset’

GB News’s Political Editor Christopher Hope put it to Keir Starmer that he has been “stitched up like a kipper” by the EU.

The Prime Minister spoke to journalists after unveiling the terms of his post-Brexit ‘reset’ with the bloc.

He declared “Britain is back on the world stage” while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it was a “historic moment”.

Britons fear measures like a rekindled youth mobility scheme and EU access to UK waters represents significant concessions to the bloc.

Chopper put it to the PM at the Central London summit: “As you know, critics say your deal turns us into rule takers, not rule makers on standards.

“The Scottish Fishermen Federation say your deal is a ‘horror show, far worse than Boris Johnson’s botched Brexit agreement’. Are they right? Have you been stitched up like a kipper by the European Union?”

The Prime Minister hit back: “The driving principles behind this bill are really important. Does it bring down bills?

“Supermarkets in Scotland are celebrating this because they know it will bring down prices.

“We all know how hard the cost of living crisis is bearing down on working people. Therefore, bringing down bills is hugely important.

“Does it boost jobs in security, in defence and steel? And of course all those areas affected by the SPS Agreement. Does it take vital measures to help protect our borders?

“This goes beyond what we have done before in being able to answer those questions.

“Next year, under the old arrangement, we didn’t cease to have any EU fishing in our waters, we simply had a year-on-year negotiation which meant no stability for anybody.

“Because of the SPS Zone being permanent, that means for fishing communities their fish can be sold into the European market.

“When 72 per cent of your fish goes into the European market, that makes a material difference in terms of cutting the red tape and the bureaucracy.

“It unlocks the shellfish that couldn’t be sold into the market at all until we made this arrangement.”

He continued: “It is important to emphasise again the £360 million transformation fund to fishing communities that was not in place before.

“That’s why the comprehensive nature of this deal across so many strands is totally focused on that question. Does it bring down bills? Does it drive down jobs?

“It answers all those questions which I think are fundamental.”
