"This is ultimately a matter for the party in Westminster to decide. I'm here to support the party in whatever way I can."

Delivering their verdict on Mr Burnham's possible leadership bid, Manchester locals spoke to GB News Yorkshire and Humberside Reporter Anna Riley, with the majority backing him.

One local told GB News: "He's fine by me. If he wants to become PM, by all means, go do so.

"If he's going to run for Prime Minister, he'd better have a mental health act up and running, and fairness and transparency."

One young Mancunian hailed Mr Burnham as a "beacon of the North" and admired his "ambition" as Mayor.

He explained: "I'm a massive fan of his ambition, and I've tracked his journey for quite a while now.

"I think, if we look around, what he's done for Manchester as a place has become the beacon of the North and almost combated London, taking the good aspects away from London and bringing it to Manchester. I'm all for it."

Criticising the current Prime Minister, another resident criticised Sir Keir and his "Government of deceit".

He told GB News: "He's got to be better than our current leader. I'm afraid this is a Government of deceit tax.

"Where is the entrepreneurship? Where is the business growth? They're not allowing any of that. It's just tax, tax, tax."

Speaking to a critic of Mr Burnham, one lady told GB News that she "isn't really impressed" with his record as Mayor.

She fumed: "From what I know about him, I'm not really impressed. I'm not impressed with the Labour Government full stop. I think Keir Starmer is not for the British people.

"I've always been a Conservative, and they didn't do a lot either, so I'm not sure who should be in next. But I'm not happy with anything at the moment to do with politics. They're all looking after themselves, and the working class people are not looked after."
