Kelvin Mackenzie argues the only winners from this scandal is King Charles and Prince William

Even somebody as stupid and as entitled as Andrew Windsor must accept the game is up.

True, he has agreed to no longer be called the Duke of York, but it can only be a matter of time before he accepts the nation no longer wants him to be called a prince either.

Nor is it right, and an insult to ordinary people who are finding life really tough at the moment, that he can continue to hang on to his 30-room mansion, which appears to be funded by a secret donor.

At every turn Mr Windsor turns out to be a bad‘un. He was in his forties and she, Virginia Giuffre, was a teenager.

According to Virginia Giuffre's posthumous book, she had to accommodate him sexually on three different occasions. At the time of the claims, Mr Windsor was in his forties and at the top of the Establishment and she, Virginia Giuffre, was a teenager. Claims Mr Windsor, himself, denies, and it is likely now impossible to prove them one way or the other.

For the best part of a decade Mr Windsor has been batting away the allegations, including through the mad idea that an interview to the BBC would see the end of the speculation.

It had the opposite effect. Now there is a suggestion Mr Windsor would turn down staying in the British Embassy in Bangkok for free on his multiple visits to the region, but instead insisted that he was put up, at the taxpayers’ expense of £50,000, at the Mandarin Oriental in the Thai capital.

I object to the fact that he does not face daily scrutiny. I like the idea of him being jeered in the street. Or being put in stocks with his dreadful ex-wife so that we could throw rotten fruit at them.

Those were the days. I really do object at his ability to live in splendour in Windsor Great Park on an estate with 100 acres, which includes a gardener’s residence, six cottages for live-in staff and a police suite providing accommodation for security officers.

The facts are simply. He bought the 75-year lease from the Crown Estate for £1million in 2003 and spent a further £7million on renovation.

He pays an annual rent of £260,000 a year. How on earth can Andrew, who has no obvious income outside a modest Royal Navy pension, afford to live like this?

And why is he so intent on staying there when he has no visible signs of support

When Charles tried to push Mr Windsor out of the Royal Lodge, the 65-year-old resisted and was able to prove to the Crown Estate that, thanks to a secret backer, he could carry on paying for reparation and the rent.

Maybe there's a mystery man who is funding his lifestyle.

There are only two men who emerge well out of this scandal. King Charles, has battled manfully and diplomatically over the years, to get Mr Windsor to do the decent thing and was finally forced to strip him of his titles.

The other was Prince William because he made it clear in a briefing to The Sunday Times that his uncle would not be invited to his Coronation and would have to watch it on the television.

That Royal Lodge would have made a perfect home and peaceful home for him and Princess Katherine.

That has been denied to them by the selfish prince that is Mr Windsor. There’s much I can’t forgive him for – his treatment of the princess is right up there.
