We British like to consider ourselves a country with values worth defending and extolling; one of those precious values is law and order.
A nation without property rights and robust protection by the enforcers of the rule of law can never be a free nation. You cannot reasonably assume that what is yours will remain yours if the guardians of your right to own property don’t show up when you need them.
But that’s what’s taking place in lawless Britain today. This last week a friend of mine had his bag stolen in London; he told me that he knew where this bag was because he had the tracking data from his laptop. The bag, containing personal items like his passport, was quickly written off as irretrievable. The police say there’s nowt they can do, move on. And this isn’t an isolated, one-off case.

A significant report by Andy Cooke, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary, has documented deep defects in police forces’ handling of crimes like theft, robbery and burglary. Fewer than one in 20 thefts and one in 15 burglaries result in a criminal being caught and charged. As you might be aware, the Conservatives pledged 20,000 cops in their 2019 election-winning manifesto to replace those that were cut, and both Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have committed to meeting that target. I ask you, though, what use is such a target? We could have an extra 100,000 cops, and unless their priorities align with our own, what’s the point?

It seems that the police are policing political correctness more and more- but not seemingly law and order. We want real crimes investigated , not non crime hate incidents being recorded. And while I am at it, posing for pictures at pride festivals in activist charity Stonewall-emblazoned pride cars that look better suited to Coco the Clown and not Colin the copper is not a great look.
I mean, ask yourself this, what must you do to get the cops to investigate a burglary and theft in this day and age? Do we tell them that you think it was a hate crime, that the burglar misgendered you, or that he used your hosepipe whilst he was over to water the garden? That the burglar wolf-whistled at you, sent you an ‘offensive’ tweet or once made a non-PC joke on Facebook? The things that the police will and won’t investigate are becoming a woke joke.
Of course – senior police officers blame cuts, but I ask you, what criteria must you now hit to be taken seriously by the plod?
Most want to get policing off our tweets and onto our streets. It shouldn’t be the role of the police to soothe the petulance of the permanently offended, and it should be the role of the police to investigate and charge those that have stolen something that another has worked damn hard to buy. Some brave lads and lasses gallantly work each day to keep us all safe; we’ll be doing them a favour if we remind the whole of the force of their day job. After all, folks, they’re Britain’s police force, not Twitter’s police force.
