Asylum seekers detained on arrival in Britain, housed in former military bases and then potentially packed off to British overseas territories such as Ascension Island in the South Atlantic. No right of appeal. Goodbye, see you later off you pop.

The NHS, HM Revenue and Customs and the DVLA would all be required to share data automatically, so illegal migrants could be tracked down and arrested.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage outlined the plans in an interview with The Times today, warning that the immigration crisis poses not just a national security threat but is also fuelling public anger “not very far from disorder.”

Farage’s plan, to be unveiled in a glitzy announcement on Tuesday, begins with leaving the ECHR, of course, and scrapping the Human Rights Act.

Two steps he argues would be relatively easy to achieve. Reform would then introduce a British Bill of Rights before quitting the Refugee Convention, the UN Convention Against Torture and the Council of Europe’s anti-trafficking convention, all under the banner of Britain facing a “state of emergency.”

Dubbed Operation Restoring Justice, the proposals would see detention centres built to hold up to 24,000 people, in prefabricated facilities with canteens and medical services on site.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

. Crucially, and this is important in the context of hotels, no one would be allowed to leave. No asylum seekers roaming the streets of British communities.

Farage told The Times. “They have no right to claim asylum. They’d be arrested and detained. They’d be put into disused military bases.

"Don’t tell me we can’t put together facilities, because we can. They would be treated with a degree of civility. Of course they’re going to be fed, watered and looked after, given medical care if they need it.”

Reform would also be open to third-country deals reviving the Tories’ Rwanda plan, for example, and striking agreements with nations such as Albania.

They estimate Britain could run five deportation flights a day on RAF Voyager aircraft if necessary. And, Farage insists, it could all be done now. Labour could do it. Sir Keir Starmer could do it. It just needs political will.

He points to Donald Trump in the United States, who declared a national emergency, deployed troops to the southern border and swiftly ended illegal migration.

The US, Farage notes, has just recorded its third straight month of zero illegal migrant releases.

So, as I’ve been saying for weeks now, it’s time to stop getting bogged down in endless details where to house illegal migrants, what benefits and rights they should have, who pays for what.

The country has had enough. With small boat crossings rising and the criminal gangs still operating despite Labour’s promises, the pressure is now on Sir Keir Starmer to play his hand.

The pot is massive: the keys to No10 Does Starmer call Farage and match his ambition? Does he get brave and raise him, going harder and faster to solve the problem?

Or, most likely, does the Prime Minister fold completely, carry on with the same fruitless course and consign this Labour Government to the dustbin of history?
