Mercy Muroki: Quidditch organisers want to profit off of JK Rowling whilst shirking any attempt to have a conversation about trans rights

The organisers of real-life quidditch have announced they'll be changing the name of the sport to 'distance' themselves from JK Rowling, who literally invented the game in her Harry Potter book series.

Quidditch – for those that don’t know - is a fast-paced contact sport, played in over 30 countries, where players – in Harry Potter fashion - have to keep a broom between their legs at all times. Yes, really.

A joint statement by US Quidditch and Major League Qudditch said that the organisations will be "distancing themselves from the works of JK Rowling" because of her, quote, "anti-trans positions".

The leagues add themselves to a growing list of people who want to profit off the genius of JK Rowling whilst cowardly shirking any attempt to have a full conversation about trans rights and the protection of biological women.

To listen to women. Warner Brothers, for instance, virtually erased Rowlings' name from the trailer of an upcoming Harry Potter spin off – a spin off she wrote. And she's been widely denounced as a transphobe by vacuous Hollywood celebs, including much of the Harry Potter cast.

Although, credit to Robbie Coltrane - who plays Hagrid - for defending Rowling's right to voice her opinion.The reaction to J K Rowling has been everything from disproportionate to downright disturbing.

When one of the most celebrated film-makers in the world, Roman Polanski, was convicted of drugging and raping a 13 year old girl, Hollywood did not cancel him. In fact the convicted child rapist went on to win Baftas and Golden Globes, the world's biggest stars like Johnny Depp, Ewan McGregor, and Kate Winslet were still lining up to put their names to his films.

Kate Winslet when asked how she felt working with someone convicted of a child sex crime said, quote "you put it to one side and just work with the person". Contrast that to how JK Rowling has been treated for merely expressing concern about how the trans rights debate is currently playing out.

For those that have not followed the twists and turns of Rowling's story so far, her views are these: Firstly, she is worried that women, as she says "are being told to shut up and sit down" when they express their views. Secondly, she's concerned with the huge rise in kids being referred to gender clinics. She cites an over 4400% rise in girls in the UK being referred to trans clinics.

She's also concerned that women are basically being reduced to sexless androids like 'people with vulvas' - and having their biological realities denied. And, she's critical of the fact we are endangering women by distorting reality.

Scottish police, for instance, will be recording rapes by men who identify as women as rapes by women. These are perfectly reasonable concerns. I see that.

And I believe, the majority of people in the country see that too.
