Kelvin MacKenzie delivers his verdict on driver Jamie Bellamy after he actions left a man dead on the road

I find it impossible to understand how female prison officer Jamie Bellamy, 25, is a free woman.

So this is what she did in a mad 23 minutes while driving at speeds of up to 75mph along the M62.

Kelvin MacKenzie and Stuart Murphy who was tragically killed

She read 23 WhatsApp messages, received three Facebook messages, took three incoming calls, sent a voice note and made several calls herself.

As you might expect, and as Bradford Crown Court was told, she was ‘’ swaying left and right’’ as she made her way home down the motorway.

The inevitable result was she crashed into barrier and flipped. She escaped basically unharmed, and the cars immediately behind her swerved out of her way.

But the knock on effect of her crash led to lorry driver Stuart Murphy, 37, being killed as his truck piled into another lorry which had pulled up sharply to avoid what had happened ahead.

So let’s be clear if Bellamy hadn’t driven like a lunatic Stuart would still be with us today.

In her defence Bellamy’s barrister said she had a difficult day at the prison where she worked because, among other things, staff had gone sick. That there was no defence or explanation.

But instead send her to prison Justice Rose, who has been both a barrister and circuit judge in the area, showed her sympathy over the job she did. How ridiculous.

And she was given a 7pm to 7am curfew and a two-year community. Whatever that means. If I were a member of the Murphy family I would be furious at that sentence.

I would like to the CPS appeal that sentence on the basis that any of the nutters who you see on their phone today will see this a green light to carry on using social media as they know the courts won’t do anything about it.
