With Angela Rayner in charge, this country is finished, writes the columnist and GB News regular

The thick-as-mince ex-housing minister, Angela Rayner, is apparently telling Labour MPs its “now or never” to oust Keir Starmer.

Is she telling them this from her sunbed in Brighton while vaping and swigging a large glass of white wine because she seems to do a lot of all three?

But who the hell does this human equivalent of a Pot Noodle think she is to be telling politicians anything? She isn’t even in Government, yet suddenly the Corbynista acolyte is calling the shots about how and when Starmer should be kicked out and telling MPs what needs to be done to save the Labour Party and the Government.

That’s how power-mad Rayner apparently sees herself – the saviour of both the Government and the country - when in fact, if she gets the top job, she will destroy both.

No doubt she’s being egged on in her quest for power by her boyfriend Sam Tarry, who led Corbyn’s leadership campaign. I bet it’s him who’s persuaded her she’s the one to be PM, no doubt because through her he can impose his far-left, fanatical views on a country that, thanks to Starmer, is already in the toilet.

But as well as being a hypocrite, Rayner also stretches credulity because for the past year, she’s been telling anyone who’d listen that she isn’t the vaguest bit interested in being Prime Minister - oh dear me, no.

But those around her say that these days, she talks of little else.

How in God’s name did this once great country find itself in the position where Angela Rayner is the hot favourite to run Britain?

Especially when she’s also an arch hypocrite who spent years screaming for the heads of other politicians who hadn’t paid their taxes, yet when she avoided hers, she tries to excuse it by bleating that people were only gunning for her because she’s a working-class woman.

If Rayner is really the best political talent the Labour Party has to offer, then God help them – and us. But it shows how far their heads are stuck down the political manhole if they don’t see her brand of hard-Leftism might appeal to the Party, but is a total turn-off for disillusioned Labour voters across the country.

The terrifying fact is that with Rayner in charge, this country is finished. Whatever mistakes Starmer has made, she will compound them a hundredfold.

She, together with her Leftie mates and the trade unions, will bring this country to its knees. There will be more taxes and more government spending. The unions will have unstoppable power, and Miliband will be allowed to run riot with Net Zero.

Don’t forget it was Rayner who was one of the major opponents of Starmer’s welfare reform bill, so if she’s in charge, the number of people on benefits will rocket.

The wealth creators will flee, as will the innovators and the strivers. Because she will spit on them all, too thick to see they’re what keeps this country afloat.

She’s apparently now being urged to strike a Brown/Blair-style pact with Andy Burnham, who might be above her in terms of intellect but not in competence. But the talk is that if she did, she’d get to choose any job in Government she wanted. (Is there such a job as Freebies Minister?)

And how appalling is that? Because none of that is about what’s best for Britain. It’s about what’s best for the politicians involved.

As for those claiming it would be reminiscent of the Blair/Brown pact. I’m sorry, but it wouldn’t be anything like it because in that particular scenario there were two intellects involved. In this pairing, there’d only be one.

How the Hell did it come to pass that Labour has sunk so low its most credible choice for PM was embroiled in a tax scandal, who was sacked for breaking the ministerial code, who, when she gets a few too many wines down her, publicly calls opposition politicians scum, homophobes, racists and misogynists and who takes free clothes and holidays from rich Labour donors.

She is devoid of class, intelligence, and just the idea of her at the dispatch box shaping national policy and representing Britain on the global stage is horrifying.

And I’m sick of hearing how “down to earth “ she is, like it’s an excuse for her vulgarity and crassness.

Whenever she’s criticised for being crass, she whines that it's snobs slating her because she’s a working-class woman.

No, it’s because she’s just crass and because she shames the working classes she claims to represent.

Save for a short stint as a social care worker, Rayner’s never had a proper job. She’s spent most of her life as a trade union rep and later a full-time union official.

And why should we all be expected to pander to the theory that Rayner should be celebrated for no other reason than she managed to make it to Westminster from the council estate where she was born, and that she speaks with a northern accent, when none of those things should be a free pass to her getting the premiership? Not when she lacks every other credential to do the job - competence, judgement, intellect, subtlety.

As for those who say it doesn’t matter whether she left school at 15 with no O levels – well, I’m sorry it damn well does, especially if you plan to run a country, negotiate with world leaders and have the kind of responsibility that can make or break countries – not to mention people’s lives.
