The PM might as just as well just throw in the towel to Reform right now, writes columnist Carole Malone

The problem isn’t just that Keir Starmer has zero judgment. The real problem is that he’s an abject idiot.

Has he not been listening to the British people over the past two years? Has he not heard the roar of their anger over illegal asylum seekers being put up in four-star hotels?

Does he not understand the British sense of “fairness and decency” has been wrecked by his shambolic Government that rolls out the red carpet to illegal immigrants and treats them like they’re precious, welcome citizens?

Clearly not because his latest plan is to house asylum seekers in brand new council houses when there are £1.3million families here who’ve been on housing waiting lists for years.

Yet, here we have a Prime Minister who wants to make them wait longer and give whatever council houses that are up for grabs - houses paid for by taxpayers’ cash - to people who have come to this country illegally and will never contribute anything useful to it.

They’re the kind of people who will be given a council house and stay in it for life without ever having done a damn thing to deserve it – like working and paying taxes.

Yet Starmer would rather give these people priority over hard-working Britons and veterans who have fought for this country but have nowhere to live.

He’d rather lavish whatever riches Britain has on people who shouldn’t be here and put those who’ve lived and worked here all their lives at the back of every queue – housing, healthcare, schooling.

What the hell’s wrong with the man? Even if he doesn’t give a toss about the British people, which he’s made clear time and time again, we know he has a sense of self-preservation - hence his Herculean efforts to see off Andy Burnham's challenge for the Labour leadership.

Surely, he must know that giving council houses to illegal immigrants is electoral suicide?

Does Starmer not understand this scheme will go down like a lead balloon everywhere but particularly in those Red Wall constituencies which Labour desperately need to hand onto?

He might as just as well just throw in the towel to Reform right now because it will take every seat in those areas where he decides to give new council houses to illegal immigrants. Or even legal ones.

British people – and their needs – must come first. But the human rights lawyer Starmer and his Lord Chancellor, Lord Hermer, have never quite understood that.

This news comes as it’s been discovered that around 200 local authorities have already registered interest in this pilot scheme that would fund the building of homes or the refurbishing of derelict sites for asylum seekers.

So yes, your local authority - which in recent years has doubled your council tax - also puts illegal immigrants before you.

So exactly what is Britain now? Because from where I’m sitting, it feels like it’s just one big dumping ground for the world’s poorest?

How dare Governments and local authorities conspire to change the whole structure and culture of this country – and for what?

Is it because the ECHR tells us we have to fund and house anyone from sub–Saharan Africa who fancies a life here? Or is it because Labour wants to import more votes as asylum seekers (when they’re able) will always vote for a government that has gifted them a life on benefits.

There was even a story this week saying there are plans to make the countryside more ethnically diverse (presumably they want to dump a whole load of asylum seekers there too) But why?

Are white people offensive to the eye now? Are we not supposed to be together in large numbers in our own country because it’s scary or offensive to asylum seekers? If it is - tough.

It may have escaped the notice of the diversity zealots, but Britain is a predominantly white country, and the idea that there’s something wrong with that is beyond offensive.

And it’s even more offensive that a lot of those (Labour-run) councils which have applied to be part of this scheme - Brighton, Hove, Peterborough, Thanet - are all areas that have high numbers of veterans sleeping on the streets.

Many Labour MPs are now telling Starmer he must U-turn on this disgusting policy, which would make it his 14th or 15th so far - who knows, we’ve all lost count.

But even if it is scrapped, what the hell made him think he could get away with this?

It’s bad enough that hard-working Britons have to stomach watching illegal asylum seekers enjoying the kind of four-star lifestyle they can’t afford, but taking away actual houses from them is beyond the pale.

The Government claims it's going to close every asylum hotel – which I’ll believe when I see it. But what really needs changing is this Government's attitude that people who come here illegally deserve the best of everything.

They don’t. If we put them all in detention camps away from towns and cities (where they couldn’t harm anyone) and give them just the basics, then maybe they wouldn’t keep coming in the numbers they are.

Councils spent £750million on social care for migrants last year, which has tripled in the last five years. And more than £2billion is spent every year on hotels and subsistence.

When is it going to stop?
