Forget Kemi and Penny, only Boris can save us now! Says Peter Bone

Former Tory MP Peter Bone gives his verdict on the Tory Party in an exclusive members-only article
May I first declare an interest, I am a Boris man! During his leadership election, I helped set up and run the Back Boris Tour.
Boris was a great Prime Minister. He fixed a broken Parliament, delivered Brexit, achieved a quota-free tariff-free free trade agreement with the EU, got through the country through Covid, successfully delivered the first vaccine in Europe protecting billions of people across the world, led Europe in supporting Ukraine after Russia’s barbaric invasion.
A pretty good record for any PM!
However, Rishi is now PM, and he is pursuing good Conservative policies. Twice in recent months he has delivered a massive tax cut for working families. The economy is growing. Unemployment is at record lows. Inflation has been slashed.
There is massive investment in the NHS, an example of which is a new General hospital is being built near me. Waiting times are on the way down. Legal immigration is falling. Most importantly, the Rwanda policy will become law next month. Illegal migrants crossing the channel in small boats will finish up in Rwanda not the UK.
I have worked with Penny Mordaunt and know she is very impressive. Kemi Badenoch is forthright and very able. Equally, there are other exceptional ministers waiting in the wings but there should only be one reason to change leader at this time and that is for a change in policy and direction.
Rishi is cutting taxes, growing the economy, reducing inflation, improving the NHS, reducing legal immigration and about to stop small boat crossings. Which of these Conservative policies would a new leader change? I would suggest none.
Yet, we have a poll rating of just over 20 per cent. It is not our policies that are holding us back it is our failure to promote them, create a vision and get the public to listen to us again. That is creating a vacuum into which Reform have stepped. They are now polling around 13 per cent overtaking the Liberal Democrats.
We need someone who can articulate to the country the great work that is being done by our Prime Minister. Someone who is able to cut through all the noise and be heard. Someone who can win where others cannot.
There is only one Conservative who has the charisma, the intellect and the eloquence to get our policies across. Only one man who can walk down the road and cars will stop and people get out to see him. Only one man who can defeat Labour in their strongholds. That person is Boris.
Now with Rishi as PM developing and implementing Conservative policies and David Cameron asserting British values overseas, Boris could go around the country and explain the vision, whether on TV, to large audiences or speaking to people in market squares.
With Rishi at the top, Dave to his left and Boris to his right, what an unstoppable trio that could make.
I believe the opinion polls would start to move, Labour would begin to panic. The one thing they fear is the return of Boris. Nobody could be sure what effect this would have on the General Election.
Politics is, after all, the science of the unpredictable.
