Five European cities rank in the top 10 - including in first, second and third place

The world’s pickpocket capital has been revealed in a newly-released "league table".

Paris is ranked as the number one capital city where you’re most likely to be pickpocketed.

The research, which looked at Google reviews, found the French capital accounted for 16.5 per cent of all theft-related reviews.

The conductors of the research, RadicalStorage, warned that tourist-heavy areas such as the Eiffel Tower and Montmartre lead to opportunistic theft.

The research also warned of common pickpocket schemes such as the “friendship bracelet” scam, where someone ties a bracelet onto your wrist, indicating that it is free before demanding payment.

Other scams mentioned included fake charity schemes, seeking donations for organisations that do not exist.

Ranked behind Paris were other European capitals, with Rome, Italy ranking second and Barcelona, Spain ranking third.

Other cities within the top ten included the American cities New York, Orlando, and Las Vegas.

Orlando was named the robbery capital of the world, with 4.3 per cent of reviews belonging to the city, and 12.5 per cent of those reviews mentioning robbery specifically.

Delhi, which ranks just within the top 10, was named as the fraud capital of the world.

The top 10 list ranks as follows:

  1. Paris, France;
  2. Rome, Italy;
  3. Barcelona, Spain;
  4. Bangkok, Thailand;
  5. Orlando, USA;
  6. Istanbul, Turkey;
  7. New York City, USA;
  8. Milan, Italy;
  9. Las Vegas, USA;
  10. Delhi, India.

But London - despite battling a crimewave - ranked outside of the top 10, despite a "theft from the person" rate of 8.21 offences per 1,000 people.

In Britain's capital, "visible" offences such as shoplifting and theft are at their highest levels in 15 years.

A 2021 study published in the Journal of Criminal Science found that people’s perceptions of crimes are more affected by their sense of low-level disorder and police performance.

Britons also reported feeling safer when walking after dark - though still thought anti-social behaviour was on the rise.

Sir Sadiq Khan said last year that there was a long way to go before he would be satisfied with London’s safety.

Data released in 2025 revealed that overall crime had increased by 31.5 per cent in the last 10 years.

Reform UK Assembly Member Alex Wilson said last summer: "If Sadiq Khan thinks London is getting more safe, he needs to get out more.

"The idea he points to incremental changes in just a few categories is ridiculous."

"The long-term trends under Sadiq Khan are clear: knife crime is up, theft is up, shoplifting is up, fare evasion is up, phone thefts at the highest ever seen, and just 2% of burglaries in outer London result in a charge or summons.”

But Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said the force was becoming "more capable" and was focused on "driving down crime on issues that matter most to Londoners".
