Rollercoaster horror as ride derails sending woman plunging to her death and injuring nine

It is thought that a 35-year-old woman was the person who died, while the injuries to three of those hurt are said to be serious.

Emergency responders rushed to the site of the theme park after the incident, with video footage showing medics rushing to get a stretcher through the park.

A police spokesperson said: "We are emptying the park and we've started our investigation."

Grona Lund spokesperson Annika Troselius added: "This is tragic and shocking, and regrettably we've learned that one person has died."

In a statement the theme park added that it was closing until further notice.

The steel-tracked Jetline roller coaster on which the accident occurred reaches a speed of up to 56mph and a height of 30 metres.

According to the amusement park's website around a million people ride it every year.

Jenny Lagerstedt, a journalist visiting the park with her family, told local media that she heard a metallic noise and noticed the track structure was shaking just seconds before the crash.

"My husband saw a roller coaster car with people in it falling to the ground," she said.

"My children were scared."

Grona Lund is Sweden's oldest amusement park and was opened in the 1880s.

As well as being home to rollercoasters and a number of other rides, it has also been known for hosting rock and pop music concerts.

In 1980 32,000 people attended the venue to watch Bob Marley on tour.

Sweden's Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand said: "My thoughts are with those that were affected as well as their families and loved ones."
