The headquarters were raided this morning by French police

The headquarters of the National Rally in France have been raided by armed French police wearing bulletproof vests.

President of the National Rally, Jordan Bardella, said on X: "All emails, documents, and accounting records of the leading opposition party are being seized, without us knowing at this stage the precise grievances that form the basis for this action."

He added: "We only know that all the files concerning the latest regional, presidential, legislative, and European campaigns - in other words, the entire electoral activity of the party - are now in the hands of the judiciary."

Bardella described the raid as "spectacular and unprecedented".

He continued: "[It] is part of a new harassment campaign. It is a serious attack on pluralism and democratic alternation.

"Never has an opposition party faced such relentless targeting under the Fifth Republic."

A Paris Prosecutor said that the investigation focused on the acceptance of election campaign loans which exceeded limits.

They said: "The probe relates to financing of the 2022 presidential, 2022 legislative and 2024 European campaigns."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

They confirmed that no individual or legal entity has been charged so far, with the investigation currently ongoing.

Bardella replaced Marine Le Pen as National Rally leader in 2022.

Le Pen was sentenced in March to a five-year ban on running for public office for embezzling EU funds, barring her from running for the next presidential election unless her appeal is successful.

The news follows Emmanuel Macron's state visit to the UK, during which he blamed Sir Keir Starmer for the ongoing migrant crisis, claiming that Britain is too appealing to Channel migrants.

Macron vowed to work with Britain to curb Channel crossings, hoping Starmer will agree to a three-part ultimatum.

An Elysee source told The Telegraph: "These causes must also be addressed by the British."

Speaking at the Palace of Westminster, Macron discussed the issue of migration and pushed for an Anglo-French response to deal with the "clear issue".

He said: "France and the United Kingdom have a shared responsibility to address irregular migration with humanity, solidarity and fairness," and called Brexit "deeply regrettable".
