Just hours before the fire erupted, protesters had formed a blockade outside.

Police say there have been no reported injuries and the hotel has not been used for a number of years.

Officers say they are probing the fire as a case of criminal damage.

A spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating a criminal damage incident by fire which occurred at a premises in Rosscahill, Co. Galway on Saturday, 17th December 2023.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"The incident happened at around 11.35pm and afterwards fire services brought the fire under control.

"There were no persons inside the building at the time of the incident.

"The scene has been preserved and a technical examination will take place later today.

"Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact them at Clifden Garda Station."

It comes one month after Ireland saw riots break out in Dublin, following a knife attack where three children and a woman were injured.

Police officers were attacked with around 50 suffering injuries, while buses and a tram were set alight.

A fire was also started on the ground floor of a Holiday Inn Express following rumours that migrants were staying there.
