The activists have been sent to Greece and Slovakia

Some 171 activists from the aid Flotilla, including Greta Thunberg, have been deported from Israel.

Around 20 vessels were detained by Israel, with some 450 people on board.

It's been confirmed that 16 Irish citizens "are on their journey home" having been released by Tel Aviv.

Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Harris, said: "I can confirm that the Irish citizens detained in Israel have been released and are currently on their journey home.

"This welcome outcome was secured after a weekend of intensive efforts by officials from across my department, including the embassy team in Tel Aviv, working in conjunction with international partners.

"I know that this has been a difficult time for both the Irish citizens and their families, and I pay tribute to their strength throughout.

"Dublin-based officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade remain in close contact with family members who have requested our support and will continue to update them."

Scottish First Minister John Swinney said he is "very concerned" about the wellbeing of the four Scots who Israel detained.

The activists on board the Flotilla were sailing to provide food and medical supplies to Gaza.

Jim Hickey, Margaret Pacetta, Yvonne Ridley and Sid Khan were named by MSPs in the Scottish Parliament as the Scots being held.

Several activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla have returned home, alleging abuse and humiliation by Israeli guards.

Israel has denied any claims of mistreatment at the hands of Israeli guards.

Voicing his concerns, Mr Swinney said: "I'm very concerned about the wellbeing of the individuals who are part of the flotilla that are now being held in Israel.

"We have been in touch on an ongoing basis with the UK Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) since Thursday, and I'm very satisfied with the engagement that we've had with the FCDO, and they're dealing with a difficult situation with the Israeli Government.

"But what I would make a plea for is for there to be urgent consular access for all individuals to make sure their wellbeing is assured - that should be an absolute given in any of these circumstances. And also for the immediate return of those individuals.

"We are making those representations to the United Kingdom Government, who are, of course, interacting with the Israeli Government on these questions."

A spokesman for the Global Sumud Flotilla said after the raid that all crew members were unharmed.

The flotilla was previously attacked by drones, which dropped stun grenades and itching powder on the vessels, causing damage but no injuries.

Italy and Spain deployed naval ships to help with any rescue or humanitarian needs, but stopped following the flotilla once it got within 150 nautical miles (278km) of Gaza for safety reasons.

Italy's foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, said: "The boarding was planned, we are talking about it...with [Israeli foreign minister, Gideon Sa'ar] so that there would be no violent actions on the part of the Tel Aviv armed forces, and this has been assured to me.

"We instructed our embassy in Tel Aviv and the consulate in Jerusalem to assist all Italians who will probably be taken to Ashdod, but then will be expelled."
