Shocked shoppers come face-to-face with wild boar in Berlin supermarket

Police received reports of the porcine interloper at approximately 9am local time in the southeastern Köpenick district.

Authorities temporarily closed the mall as they worked to address the unusual situation.

The incident drew a significant emergency response, with officers arriving alongside a veterinary team from the nearby Tierpark zoo, all prepared to tackle the wayward woodland creature.

The zoo team arrived equipped with an impressive arsenal, including tranquilliser guns, blowpipes and wooden shields.

However, a spokeswoman for the Tierpark explained that sedating the animal proved unfeasible "due to the layout of the premises".

The configuration of the shop's interior made it impossible to safely administer any anaesthetic to the roaming beast.

With chemical intervention ruled out, police and animal handlers were forced to devise an alternative strategy.

Officers brought in riot shields to complement the zoo's equipment, preparing for a more hands-on approach to coaxing the boar away from its impromptu shopping expedition.

The team eventually settled on a creative solution, constructing a makeshift corridor using wooden pallets to channel the animal towards an exit.

Combined with the riot shields, this improvised pathway successfully guided the boar back outdoors.

Police confirmed the creature subsequently made its way into the surrounding woodland, which officers believe was its original habitat before the retail excursion.

The mall in Köpenick sits on the outskirts of the German capital, an area where encounters with wild boar are relatively common given Berlin's proximity to extensive parks and forests.

The building reopened once the animal had safely departed.

Such wildlife incursions are far from unusual in the German capital, which is encircled by substantial woodland areas.

In mid-2023, residents of southwestern Berlin experienced considerable alarm when a boar roaming local streets was briefly mistaken for a lioness.
