Emergency services have since blocked off the entrance to the building in Brisbane

An "unknown substance" has been found in a building in Brisbane, Australia, prompting an emergency evacuation with 25 people left needing medical treatment.

They were reportedly exposed to the substance at 2.45pm, Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said.

Three floors of the building on the corner of George St and Margaret St have been evacuated, with emergency services blocking off the entrance to the building.

The service said the patients’ symptoms were minor.

Staff were reported as feeling unwell and complained of a strange smell coming from inside the building.

The 20th, 21st and 22nd floors were quickly evacuated, with the rest of the building soon following suit, according to 9 News.

Around 250 people in total were evacuated from the premises.

A scientific team was sent up the floors to try and determine the cause of the "unknown substance".
