A politican bearing the name Adolf Hitler appears poised for another electoral triumph when voters head to polling stations on Wednesday.

Adolf Hitler Uunona, 59, is set to secure a fifth term as a district administrator in Ompundja, Namibia.

His candidacy in the former German colony has drawn international attention due to his controversial namesake.

Mr Uunona, who was first elected in 2004, shares his full name with the German führer, who was responsible for the Holocaust and Second World War.

Mr Uunona has addressed questions about his name, explaining his father chose it without comprehending its dark historical associations. However, Mr Uunona has made clear he will not be altering his name despite the inevitable comparisons.

He maintains his identity should not be conflated with that of the Nazi dictator who orchestrated the death of six million Jews during the 1930s and 1940s.

Despite the historical weight of his moniker, Mr Uunona's electoral performance demonstrates strong local support in his constituency.

Mr Uunona emphasises he bears no connection to the ideology or actions of the genocidal leader.

He represents the Swapo party, which has governed the southern African nation since it gained independence from South Africa in 1990.

When questioned about his name, Mr Uunona stated: "My father named me after this man. He probably didn't understand what Adolf Hitler stood for."

He added: "As a child I saw it as a totally normal name. Only as a teenager did I understand that this man wanted to conquer the whole world."

Mr Uunona emphasised his commitment to public service, saying: "I have nothing to do with that ideology."
