Roles can pay employees a salary of over £90,000

Diversity and inclusion "experts" can have their visa application to Britain fast-tracked as "skilled workers", according to reports.

The Home Office has also safeguarded poets and bloggers due to a shortage of these skills in the UK.

These visas fall under the category for authors, writers, and translators.

Labour has attempted to crack down on work visas in a bid to tackle soaring net migration numbers.

Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, vowed to ensure that the immigration system was “linked to skills and training", with critics accusing the Government of protecting the wrong professions.

In May, Labour announced a temporary list of roles that would make foreign workers eligible for skilled work visas, including the controversial role of "equality and diversity manager".

Both MPs and the public have widely criticised the position, claiming it is an example of taxpayers' money being put to waste to prioritise diversity over merit and a politically charged concept.

Some argue that DEI efforts have been accused of leading to tokenism or lower standards in hiring and promotions, while others feel that the initiatives create division and resentment among employees.

The Civil Service alone has spent £27million of taxpayers’ money on diversity officers annually, and over £13million is being spent on the salaries of the position by NHS trusts each year.

Roles can pay employees a salary of over £90,000, with the highest paid role based in NHS North East London.

DEI roles come under the skilled visa code for the category of “human resources and industrial relations officers”.

HR works to help improve the working environment within an organisation by managing employee relations, recruitment, training, and policy implementation.

Since making major gains in the May local elections, Reform UK-run councils have begun cutting funding to diversity and inclusion roles to save costs.

Lee Anderson, Reform MP, told The Telegraph: “Standards for work-related immigration in this country have never been lower, and the countless promises to fix the system continue to be broken.

"Our soft-touch immigration policies have allowed widespread exploitation of the system – one that benefits everyone except hard-working Britons, costs taxpayers billions, and exacerbates the housing crisis and strain on public services."

Net migration to the UK ballooned to a record 900,000 under the Tories in 2023 but has since dipped.

Anderson added: “As the land of literary giants like Shakespeare and PG Wodehouse, a nation with the richest literary tradition in the world, the UK does not need to import poets and bloggers.

"What we urgently need are doctors, builders, and entrepreneurs – people who will contribute directly to our economy and public services."

Specific "skilled" jobs will lose their eligibility due to changes set to take effect from July 22.

The temporary shortage list continues until December 2026, when the jobs will be reviewed by the Migration Advisory Committee, which will issue a verdict on their status.
