A police officer in Wakefield was rushed to hospital after being assaulted

West Yorkshire Police has revealed how an officer suffered a horrific head injury while making an arrest on Friday morning.

PC Woods was admitted to hospital after being assaulted by a suspected drug dealer.


The officer was photographed with a deep wound across her forehead as blood streamed down her face.

The injuries were sustained after the suspect allegedly rammed Woods’ car.

He then fled Wakefield’s Back Grantley Street.

In a post on Twitter, West Yorkshire Police’s Impact Team said: “Our own PC Woods was injured whilst apprehending a suspect at Wakefield.

“Suspected drug dealer rammed her vehicle as she was getting out of it.

“Arrested for wounding with intent to resist arrest and PWITS Class A drugs. Get well soon PC Woods.”

The UK’s fifth-largest police force claimed Woods spotted a man committing a criminal act.

West Yorkshire Police said in a statement: "A man is due to appear at court today (Saturday, 3 June) charged with assaulting a police officer and drug supply offences.

"Ali Jones, 24, of no fixed abode, has been charged with assault with intent to resist arrest, two counts of possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply, possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply and two counts of possession of a Class B drug.

"It follows an incident on Back Grantley Street in Wakefield yesterday morning (Friday, 2 June) in which a female police officer suffered a head injury while attempting to make an arrest."

The incident involving Woods comes as assaults against police officers continue to soar.

Recent data revealed there were at least 7,357 assaults against police officers, constables and volunteers over the last three months of 2021, indicating there could have been more than 29,000 attacks during the entire year.

The number of incidents in assaults on officers resulting in injuries also rose in 2018/19 compared to 2017/18.
