It is believed there had been a search warrant when the explosion occured

Dramatic footage has emerged of a house exploding near the US capital.

Emergency services were in attendence the address in Arlington County, Virginia when the explosion occured.


The explosion took place when the police executed a search warrant on Monday afternoon.

Officers were responding to a home in the 800 block of North Burlington Street for a report of possible shots heard.

Preliminary information indicated that a suspect had discharged a flare gun from his home.

Officers told ABC News a search warrant was given for the suspect's home.

When officers tried to execute it, the suspect discharged several rounds inside the residence. At this point, the explosion occurred.

Officers at the scene were treated for minor injuries.

It is not yet known what happened to the suspect.

Carla Rodriguez of South Arlington said she could hear the explosion more than 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) away and came to the scene but police kept onlookers blocks away.

“I actually thought a plane exploded,” she said.

Emergency crews trying to put out the fire while area residents have either been evacuated or told to shelter-in-place.

WTOP, a local radio station, received a call from a listener who claimed to live in the area, saying police were trying to coax the suspect out of his house.

Local fire and emergency services posted on X that they had dispatched to the scene to try and put out what they were describing as a "structure fire".

Other neighbours reported the blast having shook their beds and left behind an "acrid stench".

Paramedics have reportedly been told to expect multiple burn patients.
