Donald trump declared a harrowing reaction to the news on his Truth Social platform

Robert Mueller, the former special counsel who led the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election, has died aged 81.

The veteran public servant passed away on Friday evening, with his family confirming the news - although his cause of death has not been disclosed.

"With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away", the family said, requesting that their privacy be respected.

The inquiry he oversaw came to define a significant portion of Donald Trump's initial presidential term.

Mueller had previously served as director of the FBI for over a decade, from 2001 to 2013, assuming the role just days before the September 11 terror attacks, receiving unanimous Senate confirmation in August of that year.

During his tenure, he is credited with fundamentally reshaping the bureau into a modern counterterrorism organisation.

His leadership spanned two administrations, serving under Republican George W Bush, before continuing under Democrat Barack Obama.

Following his departure from the FBI, Mr Mueller joined the law firm WilmerHale, though he would return to public service four years later when appointed special counsel.

Mr Mueller was born in 1944 and studied politics at Princeton University before enlisting in the Marines.

He deployed to Vietnam in 1968, where he served as a lieutenant commanding a platoon of soldiers. During his service, he sustained wounds on two separate occasions in combat.

His bravery earned him several military honours, among them the Bronze Star for valour and a Purple Heart.

Upon returning from the war, Mr Mueller pursued legal studies at the University of Virginia, completing his law degree in 1973.

This combination of military discipline and legal expertise would shape his subsequent career in public service.

Four years after leaving the FBI, Mueller was thrust into the centre of a political storm that would ultimately shape his legacy.

His special counsel investigation, running from May 2017 to March 2019, examined Russian efforts to influence the presidential election and potential links to Trump's campaign.

Trump repeatedly denounced the inquiry as a "witch hunt" and "hoax", insisting there had been "no collusion" with Russia.

The investigation secured indictments and plea agreements from several prominent figures, including former campaign manager Paul Manafort and national security advisor Michael Flynn.

The resulting 448-page report concluded that Russia had interfered in a "sweeping and systemic fashion", though it did not establish that Trump's campaign had conspired in these activities.

The report notably stated: "While this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him".

Trump responded to Mueller's death on Saturday via Truth Social, writing: "I'm glad he's dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people".

Former colleagues offered markedly different tributes, such as James Comey, who succeeded Mueller at the FBI, and whose dismissal by Trump prompted the special counsel appointment.

He wrote: "A great American died today, one I was lucky enough to learn from and stand beside".

A WilmerHale spokesman described Mueller as an "extraordinary leader and public servant and a person of the greatest integrity".

Mueller is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Ann Cabell Standish, two daughters and three grandchildren.
