The mother of TV presenter Savannah Guthrie was last seen at her home on January 31

FBI agents and Swat teams swarmed a property just two miles from Nancy Guthrie's residence as part of an investigation into the 84-year-old's disappearance.

Three individuals were taken into custody during the operation, with one person reportedly shooting himself, according to local news reports.

The tactical teams descended on the Tucson, Arizona home at approximately 9pm local time on Friday, acting on a tip received by investigators.

Pima County Sheriff's Department confirmed the FBI's involvement in the joint investigation but declined to release further details at the bureau's request.

Officers directed a man and woman to leave the premises, with both surrendering voluntarily to authorities.

Reports suggest the pair may be a mother and son.

A third individual was apprehended during a separate traffic stop nearby, which investigators confirmed was connected to the main operation.

Authorities have not clarified whether those detained are suspects or persons of interest.

"There is an active situation happening right now involving the Pima County swat team connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation," local journalist Brian Entin reported from the scene.

He added it appeared “two individuals were taken out of the house where swat operation is happening. I'm told a nearby traffic stop is also connected".

Mrs Guthrie, the mother of Today show presenter Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her Tucson home on January 31.

Investigators believe she was abducted sometime late that Saturday evening or in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Authorities said the elderly grandmother appears to have been forced from her residence, leaving behind a trail of blood.

A description of an armed individual captured on Mrs Guthrie's Nest camera at her front door was released by the FBI, describing the suspect as a man of average build standing between 5ft 9in and 5ft 10in tall.

The bureau has doubled its reward to $100,000 for information leading to Guthrie or her abductor.

Friday’s operation followed a crucial forensic development earlier on Friday, when investigators recovered DNA evidence from Guthrie's property that does not match the missing woman or anyone known to be close to her.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed the unidentified genetic material has become central to the inquiry, although he declined to specify where on the premises it was found.

Despite the apparent progress, the sheriff urged patience regarding the investigation's timeline.

"Some of these cases take months, some take years," Sheriff Nanos said when questioned about whether authorities believed they were nearing a resolution.
