A "Good Samaritan" has been left in a critical condition after being stabbed by an illegal migrant on a train.
Kenyon Dobie, 24, from Charlotte, North Carolina, was knifed in the chest after confronting a passenger who had been drinking alcohol and shouting at others on the Friday evening service.
Mr Dobie had been riding a North Carolina light rail train last week when he was forced to step in and shield fellow passengers from a disruptive rider, prosecutors revealed on Monday.
The alleged attacker, 33-year-old illegal migrant Oscar Solorzano, is said to have been drinking and behaving aggressively towards riders when Mr Dobie stood up and asked him to stop.
Solorzano allegedly responded by stabbing the 24-year-old, according to prosecutors speaking at a court hearing.
The migrant is a Honduran national who had already been removed from the United States on two separate occasions before illegally re-entering the country a third time, according to Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia Lockwood.
He had also been banned from using the Charlotte light rail system prior to the alleged attack.
The 33-year-old has an extensive criminal record spanning multiple arrests.

Police apprehended Solorzano after he fled the train, and he allegedly confessed to the stabbing.
Mr Dobie remains in a critical condition following the attack.

"My body has taken plenty damage," he wrote on a GoFundMe page. "Have a tube running from my chest to a machine pumping blood out of my lungs."
He has so far raised more than $2,700 (£2,000) of his $25,000 target.
Officers who detained Solorzano noted his eyes were red and he smelled strongly of alcohol.
The 33-year-old now faces a string of serious charges including first-degree attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury, breaking and entering, carrying a concealed weapon, and being intoxicated and disruptive.
Court records show he is being held without bond.
The stabbing occurred just four months after another deadly attack on Charlotte's light rail network - one which triggered widespread fury in the US.

Surveillance footage showed the homeless schizophrenic unfolding a pocket knife before plunging it into the young woman as she looked at her phone.
He was filmed calmly walking off the train after slashing her three times, including once in the neck.
