Warnings are now being imposed on accounts that discuss US politics but are not located there

A wave of prominent pro-Trump social media accounts have been revealed to be operating from Africa and Eastern Europe after X rolled out its new location transparency feature over the weekend.

The platform's latest update shows users' countries of origin directly on their profile pages and it's exposed numerous accounts promoting "America First" ideologies are actually based in Bangladesh, Nigeria, Thailand and Eastern Europe.

X's head of product, Nikita Bier, announced the feature on Saturday, describing it as "an important first step to securing the integrity of the global town square."

The revelations have sparked chaos across the platform, with many questioning the authenticity of political content they've been consuming from accounts that portrayed themselves as American patriots.

Among the accounts exposed was one called "America First" with over 67,000 followers that regularly shared Trump-related content - it turned out to be based in Bangladesh.

The platform now displays warnings on its posts stating: "The above account is based in Bangladesh and is trying to mislead people into thinking he is from the USA and a Trump supporter."

MAGANationX, which has nearly 400,000 followers and calls itself a "Patriot Voice for We The People," was traced to Eastern Europe.

Another account, @1776General_, which described itself as a "constitutionalist, patriot and ethnically American," was found to be operating from Turkey.

IvankaNews, a fan account for Donald Trump's eldest daughter, appears to be run from Nigeria, whilst Dark MAGA posts from Thailand.

The MAGA Beacon account was posting from south Asia before being disabled.

Democrat commentators have seized on the revelations as proof of their long-standing concerns.

Democrat Harry Sisson wrote on X: "This is easily one of the greatest days on this platform. Seeing all of these MAGA accounts get exposed as foreign actors trying to destroy the United States is a complete vindication of Democrats, like myself and many on here, who have been warning about this."

Law student and policy adviser Micah Erfan posted: "Democrats have rung the alarm bell about foreign psyops for almost a decade now. We were laughed at, smeared, and called hysterical. But now it's undeniable. MAGA is, and always has been, a foreign-backed operation to destabilise, divide, and eventually destroy the United States."

The account @AntiTrumpCanada quipped: "Good morning to all the MAGA patriots working overtime in Nigeria, India, Kenya, Pakistan, Russia and Bangladesh. Nothing says 'America First' like tweeting from six different continents."

Conservative commentator Matt Walsh criticised the exposed accounts, writing: "If you aren't from this country: We don't care what you think about American politics. We don't care what you think about American culture. We don't care what you think about American elections. Your grift is over. Focus on your own problems."

The foreign-operated accounts are now facing a backlash from Trump supporters who feel they've been deceived.

Angry responses have flooded in from Maga loyalists who had been following and sharing content from these accounts.

The new feature works by displaying location data based on IP addresses rather than user-inputted information, making it impossible to manually manipulate.

Mr Bier acknowledged there were "a few rough edges" that would be resolved by Tuesday, and later posted "I need a drink" after the feature's chaotic rollout.

X temporarily pulled the feature offline on Friday due to backlash before reinstating it with a warning that location data "may not be accurate and can change periodically" due to travel or temporary relocation.

The revelations extend beyond Maga accounts - accounts claiming to report from Gaza have been traced to Poland and East Asia, whilst Scottish independence accounts have been linked to Iran, prompting MP Graeme Downie to warn about foreign attempts to "subvert our democracy."
