Pillars of thick black smoke could be seen for miles around following the crash

Two people have died after a plane crash in Texas - with dramatic footage from the scene showing the moment it happened.

Thick black smoke could be seen for miles around Hicks Airfield in Fort Worth after the small plane careered into a series of lorries.

A CCTV clip from a business nearby showed the moment the aircraft hit the ground, with a large fireball seen erupting over a car park.

At around 1.30pm local time (7.30pm BST), neighbours reported hearing a loud explosion.

One witness told local broadcaster WFAA of how they were working at a nearby cafe when they heard the bang.

Then, they said, a customer ran inside asking them to call 911.

When the witness made their way outside, they saw that a plane appeared to have smashed into a row of parked 18-wheeler vehicles.

Emergency crews then rushed to the scene and found two people dead nearby, before extinguishing the blaze.

Lauren Anderson, another local, said she saw a "giant" black cloud of smoke which looked to be almost 100 feet wide.

"There was probably about a 20, 30-minute window where it was just non-stop emergency vehicles," she told The New York Times.

Robbie Hoy of the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a plane had crashed.

The Fort Worth Fire Department's Craig Trojacek said: "There are a lot of people at home spending family time on a Sunday.

"There's going to be some families, their lives are changed forever, and we just want everybody to know that our hearts and prayers go out to them."

Local reports indicate the dead included two people on board.

However, the identities of the crash victims have not yet been disclosed, while the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would be leading a probe into the incident.

Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board revealed the make and model of the doomed craft: a Beech King Air C90, which typically seats up to six people.

However, it remains unclear exactly where the plane had come from.

Alongside Hicks Airfield, the crash site is about 10 miles north of Fort Worth Meacham International Airport.
