New York is currently facing a mass exodus of residents as immigration, crime and living costs continue to soar

New York Mayor Eric Adams has claimed the Big Apple is “out of room” to house migrants as around 500,000 locals flee the city.

Residents have found themselves ending up in Florida, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

The exodus was partially offset last year when 301,000 people made the Big Apple their home, more than any year over the last decade.

Despite the surge in 2022, New York still suffered a net population loss of almost 250,000.

However, the departures have made little difference to housing costs in the Big Apple.

Median rent costs continue to hover near all-time post-coronavirus highs.

Median rents in Brooklyn and Queens, $3,700 and $3,528 respectively, are also near record highs.

Real estate company Elliman revealed that Manhattan median rents stood at $4,350 in September, an increase from $4,022 during the same period last year.

Adams said earlier this week that he was planning to put migrants into new tent shelters because New York City was “out of room”.

He continued: “I want to be clear, the visual signs of this crisis in this city, people are going to start to see it.”

He added: “We are out of room, and it’s not if people will be sleeping on the streets, it’s when. We are at full capacity.”

New York is caring for around 60,000 asylum seekers and tens of thousands of homeless people.

More than 140,000 from the US border with Mexico have been shipped to New York City since the spring of last year, with nearly 66,000 still in city care.

Official data has revealed some 91,201 people have relocated from New York to Florida.

An additional 75,103 have made the journey to New Jersey.

A total of 50,670 moved down the road to Connecticut.
