White House officials said there had been 'unprecedented' cooperation from Minnesota's elected sheriffs

Donald Trump's administration has announced it will reduce the number of federal immigration enforcement agents in Minnesota by 700.

White House border tsar Tom Homan confirmed around 2,000 agents will remain on the ground in the state.

Mr Homan said he was partially drawing down the deployment because he was seeing "unprecedented" cooperation from Minnesota's elected sheriffs who run county jails.

He told a news conference: "Let me be clear, President Trump fully intends to achieve mass deportations during this administration, and immigration enforcement actions will continue every day throughout this country."

Mr Homan has called on more jails in Minnesota to allow immigration agents to transfer custody of detained migrants, which some of them already do.

However, others, including the main jail in Minneapolis, do not cooperate.

Minneapolis and some other cities prohibit their employees, including police, from asking people about their citizenship or cooperating with federal immigration enforcement.

They argue it threatens public safety of migrants who are victims of or witnesses to crime are afraid to come forward.

President Trump and his senior officials have said migrants must be deported, blaming them, often in sweeping terms, for financial fraud and violent crimes.

Minnesota, which is governed by Democrats, has sued the Trump administration over the surge.

The actions of agents in the state have sparked weeks of protests that led to the killings of two US citizens by federal agents, Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

State leaders have accused the Trump administration of going too far and violating the constitutional rights of both migrants and US citizens, including their rights to observe and protest government actions.

Today, National Football League (NFL) and federal law enforcement officials have confirmed there were no planned Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations for Sunday's Super Bowl or the events leading up to it.

NFL head of security Cathy Lanier said: "There are no planned Ice or immigration enforcement operations that are scheduled around the Super Bowl or any of the Super Bowl-related events."

Concerns about the potential for immigration enforcement operations had escalated ahead of Sunday's game between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Department of Homeland Security agent Jeffrey Brannigan, who is coordinating security efforts among the different agencies, said federal law enforcement had a strict and specific purpose to support Super Bowl security.

According to Mrs Lanier, the department will send a variety of different agencies to the Super Bowl that do not include ICE, Mrs Lanier said, adding that she had met with leadership over the last week and was confident there would be no ICE operations.

She said: "There is not ICE deployed with us at the Super Bowl and I don’t believe there has been in the last several."

Planning for Super Bowl LX security began roughly 18 months ago and involves 35 federal, state and local agencies, she said.

Officials expect about 1.3 million visitors for the Super Bowl and events surrounding it.
